Ugh, Awkward.

A coworker I'm friendly with is about to go on maternity leave. Out of nowhere, she tells me through email that if I want, I can drop by the hospital after she gives birth to see the baby. I have absolutely no desire to do this. But now I feel kind of on the spot. How the hell would you respond to that?

Re: Ugh, Awkward.

  • Say, "aw, thanks. I'm sure you'll be plenty overwhelmed though and I wouldn't want to make the experience any more stressful. I am definitely looking forward to seeing the baby once you guys get good and settled!  I hope everything goes smoothly for you! We'll miss you at work!"

  • Thanks girls :) That sounds really good, the only thing is, knowing this CW, if I sent her what bparkhur suggested, she would almost definitely write back "you wouldn't stress me out, I like visitors. You should still come." Lol... she just wouldn't get the hint, I'm sure!

LOL. At first I was going to say just copy and paste her post into an email! But your response sounds just like something I would say. Haha. Sorry, Lauren! I think visiting people in the hospital is so awkward! How long should you stay...do they want you there? Then the nurse comes in...weird. I hate it.

haha, I know at first I was really thinking of copying and pasting her post into an email for my friend but I knew it would probably dig me even deeper :)

Anyway, it may sound rude, but I decided not to write back to her. She'll just think I'm busy and forgot to respond. Plus she was leaving early today, and starting her mat leave right now, so it doesn't matter too much, she wasn't really waiting for my reply.

I just thought it was weird-- most people don't want a ton of visitors but of course I'd have the one acquaintance who bluntly tells me to come visit, lol.

  • That's crazy.  I'm doing everything I can to keep people away, and she's practically begging people to come.

  • I would say as little as possible, like this:

    OK!

Yep, that's it.  That validates that you have received her invitation, and nothing more.  The reality is that you will never reach the range of "if you want" - but you don't need to dismiss her invitation and put her down for offering it.

  • That is akward.  You can always send her a congratulations card.
