I put "The Cove"  on my Neflix instant queue. I'm not sure if I'll get to it tonight, but I'm going to try to watch it...somehow I think it won't be easy :(

Re: Mira06

  • Let me know after you've seen it. It is hard to watch, but afterwards I was so glad I did.

  • I watched it.

WHOA. My viewpoint has 100% changed...for instance, I've been dying to go back to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, but knowing what happens in order to capture the whales and dolphins, I just don't feel right giving my money to them, because it's like saying "that's right, mistreat these animals so you continue doing it".

    *SPOILER ALERT*

I didn't realize all that stuff about dolphins and sounds upsetting them, like people cheering. I also didn't realize they get so stressed out that they had to be medicated. I was shocked when the guy said dolphins get so upset they kill themselves! WOW.

And I really got upset about that baby dolphin that was bleeding in the ocean, and then sank to the bottom without coming back up :'(

    *END SPOILER ALERT*

If anyone hasn't seen this movie, you REALLY should. It's on Netflix Instant. It will change your views on animals....I guess I never realized how rough it is on them to be in captivity...I'm not even sure I'm okay with spending my money at the zoo anymore.

  • I'm glad you watched it.  Very eye opening huh?  But, Scott and I had the exact same reaction as you after we saw it.  We had been planning to visit Shed's next time we were in Chicago, but not anymore.  I don't think I will feel the same about seeing any animal in captivity again.

Recently we were in FL, we were on a boat just cruising a river that is behind my parents house (that leads to the Gulf).  And lo and behold we saw some dolphins.  We turned off the motor and just floated as they were swimming by.  One swam right up to the side of the boat we were looking over, turned to his side (so he could see us) and looked us straight in the eye.  It was so moving.  Once you made eye contact you knew that you were looking at an intelligent creature.

    ***slight spoilers***

I thought it was very moving when the trainer who trained the dolphins for flipper, said if he knew what he was starting with flipper he never would have done it.  :(  ANd the fact that the Japanese went so out of their way to hide the cove and keep people out, just shows that they knew what they were doing was horrible.
