HTT

When putting flatware into the dishwasher, do you put them into the dishwasher blades/tines up or blades/tines down.

Is there a documented "right" way to ensure everything gets clean?

Re: HTT

  • i have no idea what's right. i do tines up, blades up on butter knives, blade down and in special holder for sharp knives.
  • I place them tines up for the most part; except sharp knives, blades down.

My reasoning is our flatware has a hole type thing on the bottom so water gets stuck in there and spills out if we place them tines down!

  • I have no idea if there is a right way, but I do all blades/tines down. My reasoning is so that I don't stab myself when I pull them out and so that I don't touch the clean parts that will go into mouths when I go to pull them out and put them away.

good point... but i'm pretty sure i still grab the handles... i'll have to focus on this when i empty the dishwasher today, lol!

  • Bowls of spoons and tines up, blades of all knives down. I've noticed Eric does it blades up.
  • I feel like tines and blades should be up in order to get optimally clean. However, DH thinks i'm nuts and just attempting to stab him while he unloads the groceries.

  • My unconscious reasoning on the blades is probably the same as Greg's.
  • I do blades up as well, although it does make sense to do blades down so when you would put them away, you would only touch the handles and not the parts that mouths would touch. As for sharp knives, I hand wash them and let them dry in the tray thingy next to the sink.
  • Oh, to have a dishwasher...what a wonderful world it would be.

  • Rodgers puts handles down, thinking that will allow for optimal cleanliness. I hate this because our flatware has narrow handles, which slip through the holes in the bottom of the flatware holder. So then, it's all a jumbled mess I have to sort out before I can even pull the lower rack out of the dishwasher to empty it. I like handles up.

  • melissa, i've had one for about 2 months...first time in almost 31 years, lol!

  • Um, mine usually end up with blades and tines down, but sometimes up.  I just sort of stick them in the basket, and I have no problems with them not coming out clean.  But I also rinse off any food that's on them before they go in the dishwasher.

  • I always prewash too, so maybe that's why I never have a problem with them coming out clean.

Doodle is our pre-washer, however he's afraid of flatware so that goes right in.

I wonder how I can get him to overcome his phobia.

LOLLLLL!!! Little likes to prewash our dishes too He also stays away from the flatware unless we're holding it up and then he'll eat off the fork. Silly poodles :)

Ditto this. I am the dishwasher, DH does the drying. So when I put them in the drying rack, I do spoons and forks up and knives down. I don't want DH to stab himself in the two seconds that the knives sit there before he grabs them to dry them. Smile
