Honestly - is DH a good gift giver?

Background:

I don't think I ever mentioned (never really felt the need) but DH got me David Yurman for a wedding gift (my first ever, yay, I usually think it's waaaaay over priced).  BUT, it's a heart necklace that I'll honestly never wear.  So I jokingly said, you must think I really love heart necklaces (I have 2 other "nice" heart pendants on chains from him).  He said if I wanted to return it we could so I said that I think we should b/c I rarely necklaces (I'm more into "fashion"/trendy necklaces).

Anywho, 3 months later and the necklace is still sitting in the box waiting to be returned.  It's somewhat complicated for the return b/c of MIL.  MIL insisted on purchased at a dept store on her charge card and then DH paid her back.  (One good thing is that this dept store has a wonderful return policy, so we still can return for fullprice) but when we return, the $ will go back to MIL's store card and she'll have to give DH $. So annoying/awkward.

FYI: this is similar to the necklace he got me (but the one he got me was less, I can't find it online, but seems to look identical to this: http://www.davidyurman.com/shoponline/suite.aspx?itemid=-20Z4&folderid=/women/necklaceschains&keyword=Heart%20Necklaces

For Christmas DH got me a heart monitor, something I had considered buying myself before the wedding but decided to save my money, so he's kind of hit or miss

Anyone else have frustrations or silly gifts they receive from DH?

Re: Honestly - is DH a good gift giver?

  • We're probably just super strange, but we really don't exchange gifts very often anymore.  We did during the first probably 5 years we were together, but now, it just seems pointless sort of.  I mean, not pointles... I LOVE giving gifts, but just kind of, well, we'd rather just buy what we want and not have to worry about it.  lol  If that makes sense.

He's a pretty good gift giver though.  He really always has great ideas for what to get people.  And I don't really have any complaints about anything he's ever given me... except quite a while ago he got my a pair of amethyst earrings.  And they were yellow gold.  I don't like yellow gold at all.  And he knew that, but he also knew I wanted amethyst earrings and the idiot at Helzberg told him that they don't ever put amethysts in white gold.  Which is a lie, but whatever.  lol  (As I sit here, wearing my WHITE gold amethyst wedding band!)

So, his heart was in the right place, and I can't really complain.

  • I think my only "complaint" on a gift DH gave me was the one year I wanted this certain bracelet. He priced it and it wasn't cheap so I said forget it. Well he bought me another bracelet that was NOTHING like the other one. I actually haven't worn it in part because it's too big and now for about 2 years or so he keeps talking about getting it sized.
  • Yes, he does really well...proud of him.....only has had a few misses....gifts are really thoughtful and have been for 5 years <3

  • DH is very hit or miss... it all depends on how much time he had

Our first Christmas together he did an absolutely amazing job - sweet, sensitive things connected through a series of notes (i.e.: software license to down load all his music, with a note saying "because I want to share everything with you...", he'd cleaned out one of his closets "because I want you to be comfortable here...", a digital picture keychain that he'd loaded with pictures of us on it AND a key to his house with a note saying "because I treat you completely..." and the final thing was diamond earrings, with a note telling me he loved me (for the first time).

This of course made me develop a complex for Christmas the next year, so I did a scavenger hunt themed Christmas for him, with gifts in different themes, culminating in scuba lessons.  That year he didn't have much time to do much and things were so-so (an electric kettle, some lotion I'd already bought for myself, and something from Victoria's Secret).

He had no clue what to do for Christmas this year - he's been working 16 hour days, 7 days a week since we got back from our honeymoon.  He got me two things that I absolutely love that were on my "list" (on Christmas Eve, when he realized Christmas was the next day :D) - this incredible percussion massager from Brookstone, and a gorgeous necklace... one of the Everlon diamond pendants.

  • My husband is a great gift giver!  He always take time and puts alot of thought into his gifts.  But I think it helps that I tell him what I like and don't like often, especially when we are out shopping.  I think the other thing that helps is that the MIL is never present, as much as she thinks she is helping, my style is totally different.

    Good luck with the return!

  • He's pretty great. I think it's because his mom and his middle sister and very picky about gifts, so he's been "trained" to pick out really thoughtful presents, for better or worse. He buys me nice purses, which I adore, a lot, even though he says I have enough purses and at this point it's not creative for him to buy them for me - but it's fine with me! He's gotten me a few other nice things, too. This year for Christmas I basically picked my own gifts - a purse I saw at a bazaar and 2 DVDs. But it was a low-key Christmas.

  • I am quite spoiled.  DH never needs a list and always buys wonderful gifts.  I can't think of one thing that he's bought that I haven't liked.

He also buys gifts from animals.  For instance, this Christmas he got me a book and a Chapters gift card from the cat because we cuddle when I'm reading in bed and the dog's not there.

This is my problem exactly...I could almost gurantee that MIL picked out the necklace and convinced DH to give it, rather than DH seeing it and saying "Oh this is soo Hannah". Thanks btw!
  • Hannah-I am thinking I know where this was purchased since ther are the only ones that sell DY in the QC. You should be able to get a merchandise credit, it doesn't have to be put back on her card. I would just ask them to put it on a credit, or if you have a VM card (assuming that is where it was purchased) you can have them put it on your card also. I do this every year with gifts from my grandma who is a self proclaimed VM wh*re :) Plus, I love knowing that I have a credit on my charge, yay free stuff!

Yep, it's Vonmaur...but the problem is I'd really rather have the cash...DH and I decided we'll put it towards my 25th bday present to myself...a Speedy 25 Louie Vouitton :O)

Definitely would rather have that than a bunch of random VM items!! As I explained to DH to convince him, it's a classic piece that we could even hand down to a daughter.  I'm thinking that'd be a grreat gift some day...haha

  • Mike tends to be a great gift giver. He's very generous and creative which for the most part I love. Although the creative side tends to get a little carried away. 3 years ago he bought be a furry backpack. He thought it looked cool. I think it looks like a dead animal...lol

  • I'd say Jason is so-so.  He really does have the best intentions but he's just not good at picking things out himself.  If I don't tell him exactly what I want, I end up getting flowers and candles, which is fine, I love flowers and candles, but it'd be nice for him to really surprise me once in a while... we've got plenty of years for that though Smile

  • Ehhhh... Ross is hit or miss.  I wouldn't tell him, but I usually raise an internal eyebrow to the things he picks up.  A couple Christmases ago he got me a Wii, which was cool, but not ... I dunno, meaningful.  Then the next year he go me the Wii Fit, which is also cool, but again, not really *personal.*  A couple birthdays ago he got me an antique bookshelf, which I love, but I was hoping for something romantic.

Maybe I'm just hard to buy for... both his family and mine got me really weird things that I don't want/need.  It sounds really ungrateful, but I'd rather they have just kept their money, than get me stuff I really can't use.  Like my mom got me a very pretty photo album.... except that I'm really picky and have matching wooden books. And (among other things) weird socks... I grew out of the weird socks at least 5 years ago.  MIL got me (among other things) a Ukrainian candle holder shaped like a house, and a throw blanket.  Christ I hate throw blankets.  I have them coming out of my ears already.

    Wow, I sound like a snot :(

I'm trying to come up with a gift Ross got me that I really LOVED...  Oh!  My first birthday while we were together, he found a painting by my very favourite artist.  And well, my E-ring was an anniversary present ;)
