adventures in walmart pharmacy!

So I get my BC filled at Walmart b/c I'm on a high deductible plan and my perscription is cheap.

So it's $9 in the store, and $14 via mail order!  I get that they want you to come in and buy stuff, but I just go in for my perscription and that's it as I hate going there...

So it would be $60/more a year to get my BC via mail order, I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to avoid Walmart... It's only 12 miles away from our house..

  • 12 miles sounds far to me, I know you said why you go to walmart, but is there no pharmacy closer that might be a little more, but easier to get to?  Unless of course Walmart is on the way to/from somewhere like work.

(this based on the fact that I have more pharmacies than I have fingers within a 5 minute radius of my house and 12 miles gets me to work and part of the way back home)

  • For me 60 bucks is worth my sanity to not go to walmart.  I used to go there because they grocery store is across the street and it was cheaper but now we have to mail order all our prescriptions through our insurance, we spend a bit more on my flonase but it's worth not going there.

  • I go to Walmart b/c it's the least expensive. CVS is double what Walmart is. It isn't a big deal just one of those things that's annoying. We go by the Walmart at least once a month so it isn't a big deal, just hate going there...

I agree with Kara. But, this is because from home to work I pass 2 Walgreens, 1 CVS, a grocery store with pharmacy, a local pharmacy, and a WalMart. Luckily, they all take my insurance and the copay is the same at all of them. I use WalMart because I usually have other shopping to do. If I don't, I use the drive-thru. Does your store have a drive-thru? That might help with the annoyance.

  • Oh it's no big deal I work from home so I don't really have  a "route" to work. I just think it's odd that they charge differently in the store than they do for mail order.

well they have to ship it - I assume that's where the bulk of the extra cost goes

Me too!  I have at least 7 pharmacies on my route to and from work that all accept my insurance and the co-pay is the same.  For me, my mail order is cheaper but I prefer to get it in person when I need it and not be stuck waiting for the mail to come and I can ask the pharmacist a question and not be annoyed with the automated system when i have to call Teldrug with a question, especially when so much can go wrong with the mail delivery.

If you have no other option, I would suck it up and go to Wal-Mart, but I'm cheap like that.

  • Sam, usually mail order IS cheaper - are you sure it's not? because maybe it's like $9 at the store for 30 days but $14 mail order for 60 days or something like that? I know mine is like that - it is $20 for 30 days at the pharmacy or $40 for 90 days via mail order.

I was wondering this too. My parents' plan was pay for 1 month but you get 3, and our insurance is pay for 2 months and get 3. (This is through whatever mail service is provided through insurance, not Walmart or another store. Wasn't sure if you meant mail via Walmart or your insurance.)

  • Maybe the mail order is for 3 months?

Otherwise, you can go to the store, but have them fill a 3 months supply at once. That is what I do, and since I pay cash (not through insurance since it is high deductible) they can give me 3 months. Then you'd only have to go 4 times a year!

  • Oh no the woman quoted me for 3 months for $44.00, 15 for 1 month. I don't use my insurance for my 1 perscirption as we have the high deductible plan and never come close to meeting our deductible. I asked her why and she said b/c they use different suppliers. I find it odd too, but its not the end of the world. I just was taken aback since Walmart is all about low prices, and such... I'm not picky about my BC so I just get the generic. I miss my NUVA ring, but it was $$$ and DH wasn't a fan

  • You might want to see if your company does mail order with a major mailer like Caremark.
