Does anybody here crochet?

I think I want to learn how and I need some suggestions on good first projects and where I can find good tutorials.

Re: Does anybody here crochet?

  • No, but my MIL does... BECAUSE SHE'S 70!
  • SHUTUP MULVA!!!!!!!!

I do! I learned from a friend, but I also found the Stitch and Biitch "Happy Hooker" book pretty helpful. You can find a bunch of how-to videos on YouTube, too.

If you want project inspiration, check out http://www.ravelry.com

  • What do you have to say about knitting Mulva? Hmm? HMMMMM?

  • Bwahaha!  Noisy's post combined with her picture of Evie is perfect.

I could also use inspiration for knitting projects since I know how to do that (only basic rectangles and squares).

  • This yarn is ugly, but the pattern is super easy. http://laughingpurplegoldfish.blogspot.com/2008/03/one-hour-scarf.html

I would definitely suggest getting a book to help you learn to read patterns and how to do the different stitches. You can get a used copy of "The Happy Hooker" for like $6. http://www.amazon.com/Stitch-***-Crochet-Happy-Hooker/dp/0761139850/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295391320&sr=8-1

Ravelry! Seriously, you'll find a TON of projects. It's free to join!

  • Ravelry is awesome! I'll be your Ravelry friend! And then maybe I'll put some pictures up on Ravelry!

  • I should put a picture of the Mardi Gras scarf on Ravelry...

  • I'll heart it. I will.

  • I don't know how to crochet, not that I haven't tried. I just cannot make my hands do that so I prefer to knit. I agree that ravelry is awesome and I have learned lots of new knitting techniques from youtube videos. You could search on ravelry for knitting/crochet groups in your area and someone there could help teach you. We have lots of beginners that come to our meetings.

    11/11/11 = 5 years. Woah!
  • I actually have an invite tomorrow to a knitting group and another one to a general "craft night", but since I have no idea what I'd make at either, I turned them down.  I need a new project to get me inspired, but it has to be simple enough that I can actually do it.  So far the little crochet animals are the only thing that appeals to me.  And I'm guessing those aren't exactly beginner material.

  • Go to the bookstore and look at the beginner projects in a crochet book (like the Happy Hooker). That might help. Also, I don't know about crochet (I also have a hard time figuring out wtf I'm supposed to be doing), but knitting stuffed animals isn't that difficult once you have the basic stitches down and know how to increase and decrease.

  • I just learned to crochet at Christmas.  I would start with a scarf.  Straight lines, easy stitches etc.  One you know how to chain, single stitch, or double stitch you can do lots of things.

I'm working on a hat but it might end up being a yarmulke for my dog instead...we'll see.

Ravelry has tons of free patterns and you can search for easy ones. Reading patterns is a bit of trick but once you know the abbreviations it isn't hard.

I've been watching lots of YouTube videos to learn certain things (magic loop, slip knot etc.)

    HAVE FUN.  It's totalllllly addicting.

  • How come no one ever takes up jewelry making? Why does no one want to share my hobby!?

  • Kiz, I don't think your dog should convert to Judaism unless he really believes in the religion.

I'm quite positive he would eat a potato latke...does that count?
