Potty training...

So Luke is starting to give me the impression that maybe he might be ready soon. He tells me when he is pooping and peeing. Seriously, this morning he looked up and went "poo poo" "poo poo" and I said, yeah you have to poop and then he started grunting and I watched him poop.

Lately he's also been telling me when he pee. Its incredible.

When did your kids start potty training?

Re: Potty training...

  • James is starting to show signs as well. He's pooped on the potty a bunch and pee'd once.  But it's still sporadic.  Like today he pooped twice in his diaper.  I saw him straining and when I asked if he wanted to go on the potty- something he usually is gung ho about- he defiantly said "No!" And then I had 2 smelly diapers to change!

I think between 2-3 is when it usually happens, but there's nothing that says you can't start working on it now.  We are going to get a toilet seat at Home Depot/ Lowe's so that James can start sitting on the potty unassisted in hopes of moving things forward.  Though he's still plenty little and I won't be pushing it.

Also, only one of the 30+ kids on my online mommy message board (all kids born July '09) is potty trained, and they've been doing Elimination Communication since day 1, so it's a totally different animal.  Oh, and most of them are in cloth diapers, so it's not a disposable/ CD thing- it's just a little early for true potty training yet for our 18 monthers.

  • Ridley pees on the potty all the time, but not every time.  And she has only pooped on the potty once.  We still use diapers.  It is a pretty long process from the time they start to communicate about elimination and the time they are actually being consistent about it.  And from what I hear, it goes a lot smoother and is a lot easier if you just let them lead the way and don't push it.  I am hoping that we will have it figured out by the time she is 2.5, but lots of kids don't "get" it until they are 3.

  • Helen is not potty trained (she's 32 months old) and she's not especially interested right now.  She doesn't even like to tell us when she has a dirty diaper.  We haven't really pushed the issue yet.  I'm planning to make more of a consistent training effort after we get back from our trip in February.

Helen's current thing is to hide when she's pooping.  We had the following exchange a couple of days ago:

Me: Helen, what are you doing?  (I saw her go over to the stairs out of my sight.)

    H:  Hiding.

Me: Why are you hiding?  Are you pooping?

    H:  Um, no thank you.

LOL!  Of course she had pooped.

  • haha, Mainely that is so funny!

I have a few friends of 2 year olds who are going through the potty training process and it sounds horrible. Luke is way too young to do it, but I think its great that he is able to communicate that he went or is about to go. He is really obsessed with the bathroom too, watching us pee, saying pee pee whenever someone goes into the bathroom. So, maybe one day I'll just take him up on it and sit him on a toilet. Who knows!?!

  • I'm going to start training Peter in April when he turns 2. I was going to start before but with the new baby coming, I thought it would be easier to wait until after he is born!

My sister just trained my niece who will be 2 at the end of Feb. She did it over Christmas break when she was home and her daycare was totally on board the week she went back. Now she doesn't even wear a diaper to bed! I am hoping Peter trains that well.

  • Good luck, It can be a long process or it can literally happen over night. Most learn from 2.5-3 some earlier, some later. But I don't know one typically developed adult who doesn't.

I would start by buying a potty or a seat insert and offering for him to sit on it at every diaper change, which could include sitting him on it and seeing if he cries and hates it or likes it. Accept yes or no as appropriate responses and move on accordingly.

Also when you see him getting ready to go, or he indicates he is going your could offer your hand and say Let's go to the potty, and see if he agrees to go with you. Remember, just testing the waters, no pressure, no forcing, no reward, no punishment - just seeing if he will go for it.

  • I am going to start this summer when I am home with them... they will be just over 2, they have started to tell me when they are peeing or pooping but are not ready to be consistent about the potty, we are going to get one in the next few weeks and start putting them on it before bath and bed, etc but not going to really try until this summer.... unless something changes and they decide otherwise!

Same here! We bought a little potty seat and ask If he wants to sit on or before bath or if he talks about peeing or pooping, but he has no interest yet.

Ditto this!  And from the research I've read, it is an especially long process for boys.

  • With Grace we really didn't push it at all.  We had bought a potty when she was about 18 months and read her stories about the potty and talked about the potty and sat on it etc.  But she never once went on it until one day this past June she was running around naked, I was talking on the phone and she just walked over and sat on it and went.  From there we just let her lead the way.  She pee trained really quickly like within a 1-2 weeks, poop took a little longer and we went through some constipation issue because she would hold it.  So for a few weeks when she had to poop she would ask for a diaper and go that way but this didn't last too long.  We also used M&M's as little rewards for going (which so loved!).  She really trained SO much easier and faster than I thought she would.  I would say within 6 weeks (maybe even less) she was fully potty trained and in underwear she was just shy of 2.5 at this point.  She did wear a pullup at night up until October, we took that away once she started waking up dry all the time.  She actually woke up dry about 90% of the time even before she potty trained.  I think nighttime training can be more difficult and really depends on the child though. My sisters boys are fully trained but wear a pullup at night because they wake up wet most of the time.
