Does my pet need pet meds in Austin?

Hi Austin Nesties,

I currently live in Las Vegas, but it is very likely I will be moving to Austin later this year. I am learning about the city and gathering basic info to be prepared for what to expect. Right now my cat doesn't take any flea/tick medication or heart worm pills. It's such a dry climate here that we don't have many pests or a need for it. Will he need any kinds of preventative medicine such as this in Austin? I know each area of the country is different. Sorry if this was already answered. I looked over the board, but didn't see a post like it. Thanks in advance!

Re: Does my pet need pet meds in Austin?

  • It may be dumb of me, but I didn't know that there were parts of the country that didn't need those.  Yes, you will likely need those here.  I have lived in Texas my whole life and all of my dogs have always taken flea/tick preventative and heart worm preventative.

  • Thanks for the reply. I know, it is odd that we don't give our pets medicine for pests. Every pet owner I've ever known in Vegas says it's just too dry to provide an environment for those insects, and I've never met anyone whose pet became infected with those things.
  • I lived in El Paso for most of my life and we rarely treated our dogs and cats. The only times we had problems were after rainy seasons, which there were very, very few of.

Here you will definitely need to if your pets go out doors a lot. Fleas and mosquitoes are bad around in the summer. My cats are indoor-only, but I still use Revolution on them in the spring and summer. If yours are kept indoors, you might also be able to get away with only treating certain times of the year.
