Storing Christmas Lights?

What's the best way to store my Christmas lights so they don't end up in a tangled mess next Christmas?  DH took them off the tree a week ago and they are still sitting in my living room waiting to be stored.

Re: Storing Christmas Lights?

  • For a super inexpensive idea, since all of my Xmas decorations get thrown in totes, I take the tops and bottoms of shirt boxes (gift boxes) and wrap each string of lights around the box top- then just lay them in the tote. (It's worked for the last couple of years and then I just take the box top out and string them, unraveling them off the box as I go. :)
  • DH got zip ties for our lights. They are fabulous.

  • We put each strand into a plastic grocery bag, tie it and put them all in a plastic box.
  • A friend at work suggested to me I use popcorn tins to store mine in. you know the ones you get a million of from coworkers for christmas. haha

you wrap them up and optionally zip tie them. then place them in the tin. you can also put tissue paper in between the layers of the lights if you don't have zip ties. when your done put the lid on.. and into the shed for storage!

  • We have a big plastic storage tote that we keep them in.  We wrap each strand around our arm individually, and take the end of the cord and wrap it around in the other direction.  Then we connect the two ends of the cord so it doesn't unravel and get tangled on the rest of the lights.

That's harder to explain than I thought, so I hope you get what I'm saying.

  • We usually wrap them around the paper tubes from wrapping paper... just tape to the cardboard at the ends. Keeps everything from getting tangled.
  • Thanks Ladies, great suggestions!
