Exciting Morning

I work in Madisonville and if you're familiar with the area, you know it isn't a good one.  We just had approximately 10 gun shots fired a block away from our office building.  A block!  Allegedly several people in ski masks approached another guy sitting on the front stoop of a nearby business and the ones in ski masks started firing first, then the other guy returned fire.

They only have one suspect in custody right now.  I don't generally get too jilted from things like this but our entire office is on edge right now.  I always take precautions in the area b/c I get harassed frequently just going from the building to my car, but this has me freaked the eff out.  We've never had something like this happen this close to us before.  A whole block away.  Le yikes!!

  • Which business? It wouldn't surprise me if the guy was sitting out in front of one of the ones on Whetzel, the neighborhoods back in there can get scary.

To be totally fair, Madisonville isn't all bad and scary. Yep, there's a bad element there and a questionable area, but there are good parts too--just like anywhere else.

  • Wowee!  Le yikes is right!  Glad you're okay and on the bright side, your day can only go up from here, right? :)

We're not too far from Whetsel but that wasn't anywhere near where it happened.

I've been working in this area for 11 years and it just gets worse every week.  I wasn't concerned when I started here but it seems like Madisonville is making the news for stuff like this too often.  Due to our intense community involvement here, we hear about a lot more things that happen that don't usually make the news.  Areas that may not have been terrible a few years ago have progressed down the wrong road and so on.  There aren't a whole lot of areas in Madisonville that aren't at best questionable.  This is one of the reasons why we are extremely active here.  Not saying that there aren't a few streets closer to Kenwood/Fairfax areas that aren't okay, but in the heart (where we are) and up to about 2 miles in each direction its pretty crappy.

I'm just thankful that none of our employees were outside when this happened.  Its more saddening than anything that people "expect" this here b/c it happens frequently.  Even our boss' comment today was "I must be immune to this here b/c I didn't even hear it".

  • Wow that is so scary. I can't believe you have to deal with that. Hope your day only went up.

  • Maybe it's time to look for a new job? One in a safer neighborhood at least? Glad everyone is okay but that's just not the sort of thing one should have to deal with at work.

I couldn't agree more.  Although to be honest, the job thing was something I've been working on for awhile now.  Having that incident yest happen just reminded me yet again why I don't want to be here.

We are getting the house ready to go on the market within the next month or so and once we sell it, I'm getting a new job regardless.
