*Kara & Crystal*

Give me details on the 3 day please.

I have been saying for 2 years I want to do it and I think this is the year I need to make it happen.

Anything you can tell me about it I would greatly appreciate!

Re: *Kara & Crystal*

  • Butting in here, but I actually think this would be a lot of fun. I don't have the time to train properly right now, but am considering looking in to it once I finish school. I assume there is one in Chicago. Do you know when the next one is?
    my read shelf:
Jo's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
    Blog
  • This years is Aug 5-7th in Chicago
  • Sidenote, if that Aruba pop up comes up one more time I will scream. Am I the only one?

I think Kara and I can write a book. It truly is an amazing experience all around. I have never talked to someone who it didn't change their life in some way. It is a big commitment, but I truly believe that the hardest part is fundraising not walking. There is so much support from random spectators, the community and your 3-day family that they will pull you through, even if physically you haven't fully trained.

I remember my first year, my friend and I didn't really know what to expect, nor did our families. We were so over come with emotions and support. I also remember seeing a man who had lost his leg below the knee and walked all 60 miles in memory of his wife. He truly was an inspiration. Or the man that walks all of the 3 days, every year, honoring his wife, and he is in his 60's. (I wish I could remember his name!) I saw them both again in 2010! This year I also saw two women that pushed their mother in a wheel chair all 60 miles. Both were survivors.  Just amazing.

The best way to get started is to go to one of the Get Started Meetings. I volunteered at one last year. They give you tons of information, what to expect and they normally have walkers there to talk to you and answer any questions you have.

If you are worried about camping. You don't have to camp. You can have someone pick you up or stay at a hotel near by. I am not a camper, but the 3-day has turned me into one. Plus the shower trucks are actually really nice  and the food isn't bad at all. I would recommend camping, at least one of the nights if not both.

If you stress about fundraising, b/c you do have to raise a min of $2,300... there are a lot of companies that will match your donation, also companies like Pampered Chief will donate 15% if you host a party. (FYI May is when they have all of their Pink Breast cancer awareness merchandise) There is a local painting place we go to (sips and strokes) and they will host a party for you and donate $5 per person that comes. One of my friends did this last year and they donated $275! I have signed up to do a party later this year. So there are other ways to get to that $2300 than just donations!

Anything I missed? Questions? I could talk 3-day all day long!

eta. If you are not feeling good, sore, tire, blisters, etc. There are sweep vans that will come pick you up and take you to the next stop or medical if you need it. (there is normally a rest stop with food and restrooms ~3 miles or so) You also can do any of the walks, not just the one that is closest to you, that is if you willing to travel.

  • Also, Kara & I have pictures in our fb and links to our 3-day pages there. I have a slide show from the 2010 walk on the page. Here is the youtube link if you want it.

  • basically ditto Crystal - it is one of the most amazing experiences.  I have 2 FB albums from the past 2 years.

There are so many awesome people - we see that same guy that Crystal mentioned who does every 3-Day every year in memory of his wife (and his daughter(s)? I think).  He's awesome.  He comes alone, walks with this huge walking stick and when he comes back to camp he goes "Honey, I'm home!" and everyone cheers for him.

The first year I walked it POURED (and I mean, POURED) the first half of the first day.  I had miserable blisters because of it and I was in a lot of pain.  I just kept telling myself, going through surgery, radiation, chemo, and everything else is so much worse, I can walk with some blisters on my feet if it means that we can someday put and end to breast cancer.

I get emotional just thinking about it - words can't even describe what an experience it is.  Walking that last mile and through the crowds of supporters at the end and then walking into those closing ceremonies, it's just one of the most incredible moments.  It makes all the training, the blisters, the sore muscles and feet, totally worth it.

and now I'm about to cry, so I'm going to stop Smile
