crud. RSV.

Owen's DSP called me today to tell me that two of the infants in her care were in the emergency room over the weekend, and they both have RSV.  They were at daycare last week, so Owen was exposed.  This past Saturday he developed a cough, sneeze, and perpetually runny nose.  The mucus isn't really thick, so maybe he just has an ordinary cold, but I can't be sure.

Tomorrow was supposed to be his last day with this DSP -- but now I'm thinking that he shouldn't go, and perhaps a trip to the ped is in order (although I loathe going there at this time of year, because the place is swimming with all sorts of other germs in the waiting area).

And of course, I'm worried about me/Lorp.  From what I've been reading, there don't seem to be any especial risks prenatally, but I'm going to call my MW just in case.

Bleah.

Re: crud. RSV.

  • Maybe his symptoms are milder due to his age, kind of like croup in that it's worse the smaller they are.  I hate going to the Dr's this time of year too, even to the well child waiting area.
  • Aww man that stinks!  I hope he's ok - I agree that he's probably fine due to his age and the fact that he wasn't a preemie so he has strong lungs.  I hope his cold gets better though and that the babies get well soon.  I would just call the on-call doctor or nurses and see what they say as far as a visit is concerned.

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  I'd just keep an eye on him, and bring him in if it gets much worse.  It's actually really common, but really only becomes bad in high risk groups like infants.   As a toddler I wouldn't worry unless his symptoms became worrisome.  It shouldn't be worse than a cold for even a pregnant woman.  Marcus got it last year.  We were in FL on vacation, and he was coughing so hard that it was making him spit up all his milk.  He was 6 months and his heart defect put him at high risk for complications (he actually had been on a monthly $1800 shot to prevent RSV but our insurance stopped paying for it).  Since we were on vaca we had to take him to the ER where they tested him for RSV.  Sure enough he had it, but there was really nothing much could do for it anyway.  They put him on antibiotics just in case, but I think that actually unnecessary (as did his regular pedi).  It cleared up in a couple of days and he was fine - he was also very lucky!!  I might keep Owen home just to cut down on spreading it to other babies if he does have it esp since it's his last day anyway.

  • I hope he doesn't get anything.

  • I just talked to my mom (pediatric nurse with expertise in respiratory illnesses), and she said a lot of what you guys are saying, and she told me the symptoms to watch out for.  So I guess we'll just treat it like any other cold (fluids, rest, stay away from other kids, etc.), and watch and see.  Thanks for helping ease my mind!

  • Hope Owen feels better soon!

They just tested Felix for rsv tonight and I hear you about the waiting room -- I hated being in there and the Dr. was running late so we were stuck in it for an hour. Some girl grabbed two of Felix's toys and coughed all over them.

  • Yikes! Hope the little guy feels better soon. RSV is not fun, but he's a little older and you know what to look out for so hopefully he should be good. We had a few newborns come in with it in the ER, and yuk! So scary. Glad there isn't anything to worry about with Lorp either!
  • Glad your MW had good news too.  I hope it passes quickly for Owen and passes you by completely!

  • I know nothing about RSV, but wanted to say that I love the word "crud."
