Acne Issues

Ever since I went off BC about a year ago I've been battling acne.  I've never had acne problems until now and its making me crazy.  Im at that age where you have to think about wrinkles and starting to prevent them, but I still have horrible breakouts and pimples.  On top of all of that, I cant use Benzole (sp?) Peroxide, which is usually the main acne fighting ingredient because it makes my face breakout into a rash on top of the acne.  I used to be able to go without makeup and not care because I had clear skin, now its embarrassing.  Nothing I have ever bought in a drugstore works, its very frustrating.  Even my go to face wash from high school with a different acne fighting medicine isnt working.  I currently use Mary Kay's Timewise and would try Mary Kay acne products, but they have BP in them, so they're a no go.

Im thinking about trying this:

https://www.acnecomplex.com/G2/

It advertises that its gentler than Proactive and other systems because it doesnt have BP.  Would you pay $30 for an acne treatment?  Extra gold stars if you have another recommendation without BP in it.

Re: Acne Issues

  • Proactiv ATE MY FACE.  It was awful.  I think I have issues with BP too cause it always makes my skin so dry & scaly yet the acne is still there. BOO!

    Currently, I'm using this:

Its a Salicylic Acid Acne Medication as opposed to BP.  It has helped immensly, but my my skin still isn't 100% so I'm debating giving the entire system a go:

Oh & for face wash, I currently use this:

  • Ditto on the proactiv eating my face up! I honestly never found anything that would do the trick until I just outgrew it. And luckily, after having kids, I only get the occasional pimple here or there.

May I suggest getting KTFU? lol!

Oh, and I ended up just going with the Clinique 3-step system. Doesn't do much for breakout's, but seems to keep me clear in general.

  • I'm having the same exact issue since coming off the BCP. It's driving me nuts and grossing me out. I haven't found any good solutions yet so I'm definitely going to steal some of these recommendations for myself.

  • LOL, getting KU is not in the cards for this soon to be divorced lady.  Dang!  But it was a good suggestion. Wink

  • I used to use the Neutrogena stuff.  It worked pretty darn good until my stress level went through the roof.

If it makes any difference, you looked great on Sunday.  Good thing you were to my left.  You didn't get to see the giant zit on my nose.  :)

Hahaha!  Thank you!  Good make up does wonders.

I was thinking that you looked great Sunday, also.

I use the same Clean and Clear spot treatment that Devon posted. For face wash I also use Clean and Clear products.

  • Do you thoroughly moisturize right after BP products clear? Or have you tried just applying every other day etc?

I use Cetaphil for face wash, which helps a lot, and because it's super gentle, it doesn't dry me out. I follow that with a 10% BP gel on the T zone, let it dry, and then  use cetaphil moisturizer. It's what my doc suggested (Well, he prescribed an Rx with 10% BP and I think 5% RA, but I despise RA  based on side effects and potential for cancer progression, so I found just BP at target.)

I realize anyone who has ever met me would probably not take skin care advice from me, but trust me, it was SO MUCH WORSE before I started doing this. I'm also not dilligent about it, because I suck.

  • I believe the face wash I use has BP, so I can't make any suggestions for that. I will say when I switched to BareMinerals and the Skin Revver Upper Lotion (face moisturizer) I saw a huge improvement in my skin.

I sometimes use a toner with BP in it and I have to moisturize like crazy or its tons worse.  I already have combination skin, so I use moisturizer daily.  I tried using the toner every other day and even twice a week, which improved my acne, but my skin felt awful and scaly, just like Devon described.  BP even in small amounts just kills my skin.

  • Have you tried other BP things except for toner? My derm told me not to use toner at all is why I ask. He said the drying is too extreme in that form and can actually cause your skin to produce MORE oil than normal as a way to protect itself from what it thinks is a harsh environment.

Yeah, when I was in high school and the beginning of college I would get a new face wash, cleanser, bar, toner, moisturizer, and I would always get the scaly nasty face.  It took me till about 4 years ago (I apparently have a problem reading lables and putting two and two together...) to realize the common denominator between all of these things was the BP.  Now that I've stopped using BP, except for trying this toner, I haven't had any problems.  The more oil thing makes perfect sense!  Whenever I use something with BP, the next day my skin is awesome and it usually clears up my acne, but then within 2 days, my face is scaling, it feels tight and very uncomfortable.  Then I become an oil slick.  It takes like a week to recover from BP use.  (lol, my face goes into withdrawals or something!)
