I think after the baby comes, I'm going to go on BC. In the past I've only ever been on the Nuva Ring, but it made me really sick. (Apparently my body doesn't like hormones... bc or baby related...) I was lightheaded, vomiting, got stomach aches, and was really tired. I tried it for 3 months and was miserable. I then decided to swear off all BC, and only used condoms (non-latex).
However, I need to do something more than charting and using the trusty iphone app to keep my calendar straight b/c I don't like condoms and they're not a 100% safe bet either. I am thinking maybe I should try one of the really low dose BC pills, or even one of the Seasonique or other 4x per year types of BC.
Any input? Suggestions? Ideas? I'll talk to my ob/gyn about this later on, but I'm trying to do some research now as well.
Re: Anyone really sensitive to bc?
I am, but I really can't use any hormonal bc as a result. The type of migraines I get increases my chance of stroke too significantly to add in the chance that bc has.
If you chart to the full extent that NFP recommends (temping + CM + CP), it's pretty accurate, especially in conjunction with condoms. But if you're not into that, you could go with the mini pill. The downside to low dose pills is that you have to be completely vigilant on taking them at the same time, every day, no exceptions--they're so low that if you miss your time window, you will probably ovulate.
I hate birth control. I haven't been on it in almost 2 years.
It makes me realllllly moody & ridiculously irrational. I would pick fights with Brandon for absolutely no reason & cry hysterically all while thinking "What that EFF am I doing?!"
Since I was 16, I've been on:
-Ortho Tri-Cyclen - age 16 to 20- If the Devil came in pill form, this would be it; I was on this for years in my teens, but didn't realize it was the pill making me a crazy, unhappy ***
-The Patch - age 20 - Decided I'd rather not die; I had this funny feeling in my legs & I went to the doctor. She ripped the patch off my body & wrote me a RX for Yaz.
-Yaz - age 20 to 22 & again at 24 - Not as bad, but I still dealt with depression issues
-Seasonique - tried this right around the time of the wedding - While it wasn't terrible on me emotionally, half-way through a pack (a pack = 4 months), I had the most ridiculously painful cramps EVER. So I quit it & had the longest period ever. Okay, not like MonPetitChou-long, but long for me.
My Gyn recommended Mirena(IUD), but I was skeered.
I don't think I'd have the dedication to temp and chart that diligently for very long... but I do think I could remember to take the lo-dose pill at the same time every day, or at least give it a try.
Maybe we'll just get JJ snipped... after how awful I'm feeling, I think this baby is going to be an only child...
I'm on the low-dose now, and aside from libido-quashing, it doesn't bother me too much. I had stomach issues with full-strength OTC, but never tried anythign else since the "lo" works okay. Ditto what DP said about being vigilant, though. I know a girl who got pregnant on the pill, and she tells a funny story featuring the line, "So when your pill rolls under the fridge...... GO. GET IT." (It's only funny bec she's an awesome mom and it wasn't life-shattering for her or anything)
The "lo" generic company recently got smacked with a lawsuit over patent rights, though, so my $10/mo is now $35/mo... I've been thinking about talking to the doc about IUD.
This is exactly what most BCP do to me. The only one I have found that doesn't make me crazy is Levlite. I was on this until we started TTC.
Me.. I haven't been on birth control since late 2006/ early 2007. I had lymph nodes that would swell up to the size of golf balls. After 3 different operations to remove them, I am afraid to ever try BC again. My OB thought it would be worth giving the mini pill a try since your hormones change during/after a baby, but I have zero interest in finding out.
We haven't decided what we are going to do to prevent another LO.
DP- would charting be accurate if I am awake every 3-4 hours?
There are 2 IUDs. The first property of an IUD is that it sweeps the sides to prevent implantation. The second is either a low hormone release or copper to back that up. So you would want the copper version to avoid hormones. IUDs do have side effects as well though, so do look into that first.
4-8-06, technically if you had 3-4 hours of sleep consistently at the same time every night, temping would be fine. But you know how babies are with consistency
So you would at least need to chart CM as well to be sure. That will be the same no matter how much you get up.
