Organizing dress-up clothes

My kids LOVE to play dress-up.  We have stuff for police, fire, construction, doctor, princess, etc..It is in three big plastic totes. If they want to play with it, they have to dump EVERYTHING out.  I am starting to hate it.

Give me a way to better organize it so that they can see first what they want to play with.

TIA

Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!

Re: Organizing dress-up clothes

  • I got a garment rack similar to this one Whitney Design 3302 Basic Adjustable Garment Rack, took out the extensions (so the rack was only half as tall) and hung DD's play clothes on there. I put it in the corner or her playroom and her play shoes go underneath. The ones that can't be hung up are organized in small clear-ish plastic totes (similar things together) so she can see what's in there.

  • My daughter's closet had just one rod along the top.  I got a rod that hangs from the top rod from the Container Store and hung her dress up clothes on there.  I got the kids hangers that are coated with the no-slip velvet stuff so that she can hang them on there herself.

Another thing that I considerd was to hang a rod in a corner of her playroom.

     HTH!

  • I took out a shelf in her bookshelf and put hooks on it.  This would also work if you put a small rod on it.
  • i got a blanket chest at an estate auction. finished it to coordinate with our family room and put all of my daughter's dress up items inside. She can't tip to get everything out so now she tends to just pull out what she wants to wear. At the end of playtime we just dump everything back into the chest.
  • Love the idea of converting a bookshelf!  MIL brought us a big toy chest/blanket chest and I stuff everything in there.  She can't tip, but she still has to dig through and throws stuff everywhere to find what she wants, so while it holds everything in once place, it's still not convenient.
