kindle vs nook

I have read stuff on the Nest Book Club board, but I am wondering about your opinions.  I think I want a Nook or a Kindle.  I know a bunch of you ladies got one over the holidays.  So I hope you can help me out.  Here are my questions/thoughts so far on what I am looking for.

*I would like to be able to get ebooks from the library because I try to not spend too much money on books and then have them pile up.

*I think I want color, but I am not sure that matters.

*Can you use either without needing a separate light if it is darker (is it backlit?)

*I would like to be able to share books I do buy.

So what do you recommend?

Re: kindle vs nook

  • I don't have either, but a Kindle was one of the things on my Christmas list that I didn't get. Here are the reasons I had for preferring the Kindle (after a lot of looking online and Nest Book Club reading)

    1. I was with you - I wanted library books. I guess it's really quick on the Nook. You CAN apparently get them on the Kindle, and it isn't super hard, just takes a little longer and an extra step. (I guess there is some program to download and the converts the file to a Kindle compatible one). Knowing that was a huge Kindle sell for me, because it was the one I liked better all along, except for the library book issue.

    2. I had no preference on color, but I've looked at both and I like the non color one just fine. (Plus, I think it makes it way more expensive, if price is a factor for you!)

    3. I know the Kindle is not backlit. This is meant to prevent the glare when being read in the daytime/sunlight. However, it prevents it from being readable in the dark. There are a ton of covers tough that have built in lights to help with that problem. I'm not sure about the Nook on this one. (I'm assumingthe color one would be readable in the dark.

    4. I'm not sure on this one, simply because I don't know many people, especially nearby, with a Kindle or a Nook, so sharing books wasn't something I paid attention too.

Hope that helps! Like I said, these aren't based off experience, just what I read while looking at them myself.

  • I have the Kindle and love it to death but here are some comments based on research I did when deciding on which to get.

*I would like to be able to get ebooks from the library because I try to not spend too much money on books and then have them pile up.  While you can get library books on the Kindle, there are questions as to whether or not it is legal.  You have to strip the book of its DRM, which really means nothing to me but the act of doing it is frowned upon.  It also makes it that the books don't disappear after the due date so it can be seen as stealing the book.  The Nook however is nice and easy to get the books.  But, there are a TON of free books to get for the Kindle.  I mean, barely a day goes by where there isn't another book offered for free.  And yes, a lot of them look like junk but there are some gems as well.  You just have to read the reviews to make sure you don't waste your time.

*I think I want color, but I am not sure that matters.  As far as I know, the Nookcolor is the only one that offers the color.  It's brand new and I haven't really heard any feedback on it.  I think that color would be nice for an ereader to see the covers the way they were meant to be, but for me that isn't really important since the actual book part is all black and white anyway.

*Can you use either without needing a separate light if it is darker (is it backlit?) Again, I think that this here points to the Nook.  The Kindle has no backlight at all and you do need a separate light when reading in a low-lighted setting.  However, the are some wonderful benefits for the lack of back light.  For one, it's easier on the eyes, which is a good thing for those who are headache prone.  Also, the words are just so clear, it amazes me!

*I would like to be able to share books I do buy. Both allow lending.  As my only experience is with the Kindle, I can only speak about my experience with the Kindle on this one.  Lending is a relatively new Kindle feature.  I've used it a few times now and so far, so good.  My only complaint is that a lot of publishers have opted out of the lending so there are only a certain percent that can be lended.  I would assume that the Nook is the same way but don't know for certain.

So what do you recommend? As I said, I love my Kindle and would highly recommend it but it does sound like the Nook is more for you.  I would suggest going to a Best Buy and than a B&N and take some time to play around with both of them and see if either one stands out more for you.  Good luck in picking one and judging from what I've heard from others, you should be happy with whichever you chose!

  • I have a nook (the regular one) and Devin has a nook color (I got it for him for Christmas). I can tell you why I wanted the nook instead of the kindle.

    1. I'm not familiar with the library books on it, but I do have a B&N right around the corner from me. With the nook, you can read any book for free in a B&N store for up to 1 hour a day. I go there to do some work pretty often and it's great to take a break and read for a bit. This is the biggest reason I got the nook instead of a kindle.

    2. The nook color is pretty awesome. It's more like a tablet (ipad-like) than an e-reader. The web browsing is super easy. You can also read magazines on it, and the whole thing is a touch screen. You can get apps and stuff for it, too. The regular nook has a color touchscreen on the bottom, instead of the buttons you press on the kindle.

    3. The kindle and the regular nook are both not backlit. This is nice because it's easier on your eyes (it's really just like reading a book), but you do need an external light to read it. The nook color is backlit, so it looks like reading on a computer screen.

    4. The nook lending feature is really easy, but not very many books are lendable. Also, I think you can only lend a book 5 times.

I can't speak for the kindle, but I do love my nook! I'm sure you'll like whichever one you end up going with. HTH!
