Gown Preservation

Did anyone get their gown cleaned/preserved? Where did you go (dry cleaners, the store you got your dress from, elsewhere)? How much did you pay? Did you include your veil?

My dress is currently lying on the floor in its bag taking up the middle of my spare room. I've been dragging my feet about it. I did a number on my veil, so I don't know if it's worth including it. Actually, I did a number on my dress, too. I ripped the sh!t out of the tulle underneath. And I'm pretty sure there's a huge vodka sauce stain on it somewhere. I totally should have got on that as soon as I got back from the HM. Oh well.

(An unmatched left parenthesis creates an unresolved tension that will stay with you all day.

Re: Gown Preservation

  • Im doing a rtd this spring with my photog. I don't know what I'll do with it if anything.
  • Sorry, no answers here. My dress is hanging in the closet...waiting to be cleaned too.
  • I'm currently trying to sell mine "as is" so that any drycleaning will be the buyer's responsibility.  It's not that dirty and in pretty good condition, so I'm selling it for a fourth of the original price.  But, unfortunately, so far, no takers.

  • I haven't cleaned my dress either Embarrassed

I want to (try) save my dress and use it for our 10 year vow renewal in Hawaii.

  • GAH I still haven't done this.  But I'm taking it to be preserved at the shop where I bought my dress.  Dammit, why can't I just remember to take the damn thing?

Same.  and i should add, i have no desire to do anything with it except keep it in its bag.  its not "dirty" per say, probably a little dirty around the bottom, and i know the bustle broke.  but i doubt if i have a daughter she would want to wear it, i would encourage her to get her own!  i just kept it so if i have a daughter, she could try it on for fun and dress up when she is a kid!

  • i had my cleaned but not presev. its in the bag hanging in my closet. my friend one day is going to have a "dress you only wore onece party" wedding, bridemaids or any thing formal you can never re-wear
  • I'm preserving mine because a) I think it's a good idea if I ever decide to sell it, and b) if I don't sell it, it will be there on the off chance that a future daughter/niece/cousin wants it.  I won't be all butthurt if they don't, because I expect people to want to buy their own dresses, but some people really like the idea of wearing what their mother wore.

Personally I would never buy a dress that wasn't at least cleaned.  The preservation is supposed to keep it from yellowing or otherwise deteriorating (say, over a long long period of storage).

  • I had my cleaned, but not preserved.  It's currently listed on Craigslist (with no takers).  I took it to a cleaner that specializes in wedding dresses and also, it was cleaned organically.  It came out beautifu!  The bottom was hella dirty, since I put flip flops on after the ceremony, and I had a ginormous red wine spill that went from waist to bottom.  No traces left.  I paid about $250 which is average for my area.  I did a lot of research on prices and a lot of cleaners said to bring it in before they could quote.
  • I haven't gotten my dress cleaned or preserved yet. I need to get them both done since I don't plan on selling the dress. I doubt anyone would wear it again but I like it too much to part with it.

  • Mines still just hanging in a bag on my closet door in my spare bedroom. It hasn't been cleaned or anything. I would like to st least get it cleaned, but I probably won't do any preservation or anything. I really would like to attempt to sell it, but I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it just yet. Maybe I will be able to soon, who knows.

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hasn't done this yet lol
  • Am I the only one who did this?  LOL.

I spent $250 to have my dress cleaned and professionally preserved.  I was afraid it would be ruined if I waited too long.  The package I went with includes a window display box for the dress, so it is currently in our guest bedroom and I can still see it through the window box every day =).  It looks beautiful.

I'm not planning to sell mine or do a TTD.  I love my dress too much!

  • I feel SO much better about this, I was thinking I'm the biggest slacker in the world for not having mine cleanee yet! I'm not alone! The bottom of my beautiful dress is definitely dirty (pics in the park and dancing all night don't exactly keep it as white!) and in all honestly, I just don't have enough $ to pay for the cleaning right now :(

  • My dress was cleaned and preserved because my mom snuck it out of my house and took it. She took it to the same place I bought it, and they gave her a discount, so it was $150. It is currently stored in my mom's basement because I have no room for it. I love the dress, but I have no clue what to do with it. It will never be worn again, so I guess it will just sit looking pretty in the box lol.

  • I had my dress cleaned in November, and put into a box... not sure if that's what preserved is?
Anyway... I had a coupon for a Free Box, so the cleaning (after tax) cost just over $200.
Was it worth it?  Probably not since I'm thinking about taking my dress out of the box.  I hate the way that they "displayed" it, so I might try re-arranging it.
