Is brown molding a northern thing?

I'm so frustrated! We're obviously looking for new houses in MN and I am comparing everything to our home here. At 1st I thought it was because we were looking in older, developed areas but we started looking at new construction as well and even those houses are covered in brown doors and molding. It makes it look so old! I know it would be a pretty easy fix but I'm having a really hard time getting past it. Ugh, this is going to be harder than I thought. Crying

It varies here, just depends on when the house was built, upgrades, etc. We have oak trim in ours, but white trim has become very popular in our area (as well as other finishes).

Ah yes, welcome to MN. The land of the perpetual 80's. Actually what is really popular is real wood/pine look. Think cabin-y. You'll see a lot of it on the ceilings too. At least in the cities you have new construction and people who have actually upgraded. Things like granite counter tops, new carpet, and electric that wasn't installed in 1970 are far and few in between in my area, and if you do find them then you pay top dollar. You should definitely post pics of the houses your looking at! Or links.

The 1st 4 are our favorites so far. They are all newer homes but the last link is what I have been seeing a lot of. I have honestly never seen a house down here without white doors and molding that wasnt ancient. I think Aaron is going up next week to look and narrow down the options before I come up and look. We have 14 homes on our list that we want to look at... Our house goes on the market tomorrow so start sending us some sell vibes!!!

I love the 2nd and 4th ones. One good thing is you can always paint the moldings, but they are very "Minnesotan".

Unrelated: DH says there is a casino in Shakopee. You guys can leave the kids with grandma and go win some money!

Oh, and you should look in Eden Prairie. It's just a little more north of Shakopee, but it was rated #1 city to live in last year. A little more pricey, but well worth it!

If it was me, I would go for #3 or #4... In general, I think the wood on those homes is quite nice. It looks well done and carried through the whole house. You might have to look at it too tell better. The one thing with wood though is that over time it will darken....

Hmm. Maybe we will have to rethink Shakopee then. I don't know how I feel about living near a casino. There are probably a bunch of crazy people passing through...

The 2nd kitchen threw us off too. We would re-do it if we bought that house, but it's my favorite other wise.

I love the dark wood. I'm not a big fan of oak. This is one of my favorites because of the modern feel. It feels the most like something you would find down here.

I like this one a lot too. It looks like it's pretty open. I don't love the light wood trim in all the rooms. That would come out ASAP...

I hate the last one. I just posted it to show you an example of the molding I'm talking about.

Either way you're close to Bloomington, ie: Mall of America! I'm surprised to hear that FL homes are less expensive now, because that sure wasn't the case a few years ago! But we didn't have the housing bubble quite as bad as some parts of FL. Of course, the farther away you go from downtown Mpls/St.Paul, the less expensive the homes become. Will Aaron be working downtown?
