credit card rewards

Does anyone use their CC for everyday purchases like gas and groceries to rack up points for rewards? I've been thinking about doing this. My cards let me cash them in for either hotel points (which I never even get close to getting a free night) or gift cards. I always pay off my credit card, so no interest etc. I have been thinking of using my card more to earn points faster so I can get the gift cards etc more frequently. Currently I only use my CC when I book travel or for work related things. WDYT?

Re: credit card rewards

  • We use Discover to earn the cash back.  Currently we have a little over $200 to cash in and they'll send you a check or you can pay off your balance or you can redeem for rewards (typically you get a little benefit for doing this - like for $20 you can get a Staples gift card worth $25).

This is a card that is paid off each month and it's only purpose is to rack up cash back.  We put anything worth it on there, but not day to day purchases.

  • We do the same thing as Jame. I try to watch each quarter they have 5% cash back on, like one quarter is gas and travel, the other is shopping, another is grocery and restaurants, etc. We don't use cc for everything... I guess we could we just have gotten in a habit with our debt cards. (I have a debit card through boa that donates money to Susan G. Komen for every purchase, so I kind of like getting use of that!)

  • We each have a rewards CC (Chase and BoA). Mine is 1% back on everything and 5% back on special categories every quarter. Right now it is groceries and drug stores. I can get a check or gift card and they are the same number of points so I always get a check.

We used to do our groceries on our debit card because DH would get cash back for the week. But we've been putting groceries on my credit cards so I get the points. We usually put gas and other purchases on our credit cards. For something small, like a purchase at CVS or Starbucks etc, we'll put on our debit card.

Utilities and that stuff is all paid through bill-pay online.

  • We have a Chase Rewards car that we buy everything on. We do pay it off monthly.  It use to be 3% back on groceries, gas, and fast food and 1% back on everything else, but they recently changed it to 1% on everything and then they have quarterly categories they rotate through to get the 3% bonus (you do have to sign up for these quarterly).

We rack up the points and get cash back to invest in savings.  It use to be that if you earned $1, you'd get $1, but if you saved up to $200, you'd get a $250 check in the mail.

I've noticed that we've hit the $200 threshold less frequently, but I'm not sure if it's the new rules or if we're just spending less (we got this for the wedding and paid for everything on it even though we had the cash).

I need to get better about looking through their online mall because that gives you even higher percentage back if you shop online through their links. I usually don't remember.  But if I had all the time in the world, I would compare that % back to things like Upromise and Ebates for every online shopping purchase I make.

  • I use my credit card pretty much exclusively unless I happen to have cash on me.  We don't use our debit cards for purchases.  My credit card has a point system and I can redeem for cash, travel, or gift cards and other merchandise.  Tim just got a new card that earns him Hilton points (he got a ton while he was in San Diego for work for a month, so he wants to add to that so we can go on vacation Smile )

ETA:  we never have and hopefully never will carry a balance on our cards - we pay them in full every month
