Kitty mommas

What do you feed your cats?

I used to feed Stryker canned cat food only, then someone told me dry was better for them.  Now I read a blog post after a vet visit (copied below) and I hear that canned cat food is better!

Stryker gets indoor formula dry cat food and he's a self feeder.  So now I'm all conflicted!

Blog post talking about her cat:

The vet is pretty sure he has an irritated bowel, which makes sense because the rest of him is irritated on a regular basis. She said for years, vets said dry food was best, and now they are discovering wet food is much better for the kidneys, digestive system, etc. She said FANCY FEAST is the best canned because it has the highest protein so they won't eat too much.

Re: Kitty mommas

  • Edit to clarify-

We do a Purina dry food most often and we schedule feed him.  About once or twice a week we'll mix it up and give him wet food, I forgot what brand though ... I just make sure it is specifically Ph Balanced because of kidney issues Jabba had last year.

  • Perry gets dry Purina One (Hairball and Healthy Weight Formula). I like Purina One because it has chicken or turkey as the number one ingredient. We give him a set amount each morning because he would pig out if we left more than that.

Basically this for my dog. Our cats growing up never had wet. Made their poop.stink!
  • Dewey gets Wellness Adult dry food- 1/2 cup a day- he actually doesn't eat it all every day which is impressive (though I think he snacks on the dog food sometimes).

I hear very conflicting recommendations on wet vs dry food. Some people really swear that wet is better also because of more fluid intake. I've only given Dewey wet when he's been sick or a Wellness Indulgence packet as a treat.

  • We feed Jewels and Patty Friskies or Purina Indoor Formula dry food. Then some Meow Mix moist food in the evening.

I used to only feed them dry food but they seem to like the moist

Oh and I also give them Friskies Party Mix (aka crack mix) as treats but man, they are addicted to that stuff!

  • Zoe and Quincy get Nutro natural indoor dry and I just keep their bowls filled they are good about only eating when they are hungry. Then in the mornings they get about a teaspoon of nutro wet food.

    This something I've heard too.

Our cats get both wet and dry. It is what my parents did with my childhood cats and they lived to be 18 and 19 years old (they also went outside) on 9 Lives, which isn't a very good brand either.

We give the cats food at dinner time. We give them a pouch of Friskies wet split between the 2 of them and give them each ~1/3 cup of Iams Protective Premium dry (or something like that; white and orange package) in their dish. They eat the wet right away because they love it. They literally act like they haven't been fed in days when we feed them because they are so excited over the wet food. Then they have the dry to eat throughout the night and next day.

Bella is overweight so I portion the food. We used to free feed. I go by the amount it says on the dry package, subtracting out some since they get wet too.

  • I should also add back in spring/summer of 2009 Milo started throwing up a lot and the vet could only contribute it to an upset stomach. So we switch their food (they were on dry Purina Indoor formula and Whiskas wet). They liked the Friskies the best of all the wet food we tried.

  • We feed them California Natural dry food and a wet food called By Nature (Petsmart started carrying it as a new product and the kitties liked it and it didn't make their poop stink - which a sign that their digestive system doesn't like the protein/components - but we now buy it online because Petsmart couldn't keep up with my demand).

When they were kittens I did a lot of research into the ingredients and I wanted to make sure that they were getting a high protein diet. We do a mixture because they have different personalities and Scooter didn't like the dry, but Skeeter and Haloti love the dry.  We've hit a good balance now that Scooter is gone, where I only use one can of wet per day.

I was limiting the dry food when Scooter was with us because she wouldn't stop eating if there was something there.  I think she was eating some of the portions for the other two as well, because she got "yelled" at about being overweight at the vet's office.  She's probably a little overweight, but if you look at her paws, she's suppose to be a big cat compared to Skeeter.

I think the more important thing in the dry food vs wet food debate, is the quality of ingredients and the high protein content.  If the cats were out in nature, they would be eating meat, not corn.  There are a lot of good dry foods out there, like Wellness and California Natural (just two I looked at), that have a good protein content and limit the grain intake.

Here's a website with pet food ratings I used a lot when narrowing down some options. http://www.petfoodratings.net/cats.html

  • The pet store we buy our food from is fantastic. It's a local store. The folks there are very knowledgeable and are all about the best health of your pets. Protein is totally what your pets need. Most commercial brands have so much added "crap" in them that is mostly carbohydrates and the pets literally get addicted to it. Think of it as fast food for your pet.

They also recommend a varried diet. Would you like eating the same food every day of your life? Probably not. So a variety of both wet and dry is good.

We give our kitties a bunch of different kinds of stuff. Wysong is a great brand, and they have a new dry food out that has the highest protein content of any dry food out there. Our kitties LOVE it. They also like the Taste of the Wild brand. Wet food tends to have more protein in general as they don't need to include the same kinds of "binders" that are in dry foods. The brands we have are Homestyle by Prairie, Wysong, Nature's Variety Instinct, and Weruva (this is the kind our kitties like best).

Occasionally we also give our older cat (she's almost 2) raw food. Like raw beef or bison, or chicken or turkey necks. Our pet store also sells those. They're totally 100% protein. Super good for them.

    Hope that helps!

The guys at Metro Pet Market here are super helpful and I'm sure they'd be able to recommend some places to find things where you live! www.metropetmarket.ca

  • Brie- I love By Nature! Simon gets that for dog food and it's great. It's produced close to where I live (as is Wellness) which I think is pretty cool. It's been great for his digestion.

  • Well, before Sox got diabetes, he was fed Purina dry food and he was a self-feeder (and good with it, he's never been overweight).

But the dry food is too high in carb content for his diabetes so we had to switch him to wet food.  He eats Friskies, various chicken/turkey/tuna flavors.  1 can, twice a day.  I still give him dry food sometimes with the wet, he loves it and I feel like it's better for his teeth to have some.

  • I do Science Diet Hairball dry for my three boys, Gizmo is on the fluffy side and has issues with hairballs and the other two lick each other all the time.  I've been thinking about switching to a more all natural diet for a while now, I just need to do some research.

I've always been told that male cats should exclusively get dry.

That's so cool.  I was a little hesitant at first because I wasn't familiar with it, but Petsmart started stocking it in small quantities and I tried it when I was trying to find a better alternative to Science Diet.  And they loved it, so now we buy it online...I have 2 3' cube boxes sitting just inside my front door that we got yesterday (they were having a sale).

  • Peeka and Boo get wet food 2x a day and also dry food is left out for self-feeding. I've tried several times to wean them from the wet food and they've both been such PITA's every time that I give in. It's easier to feed them wet food than it is to deal with them being so annoying because they want it.

ETA: The dry food left out for self-feeding is Purina One, and a bowl lasts 4-5 days. I really only leave it out in case there are times I'm away from the house longer than normal.

  • In the past almost 19 years we have fed my cat a lot of different dry foods. She primarily ate some kind of Nutro brand for Indoor Cats/Healthy UT. It wasnt until about a year or so ago that we started feeding her the canned food (b/c she was older and was dropping weight. She has put on a little bit < lb, but hasn't lost anymore this way). She eats 1/2 can of Friskies daily (in the morning) and had her dry food available all the time.
  • We feed them Purina One Indoor Cat dry food. They also get Temptations treats once a day when we leave for work.

On each of their birthdays (so 3 times a year) we have a Tuna Birthday Party for them. We split a pouch of tuna between the three of them. That's the only time they get any "wet food".

  • We feed our cats Blue Buffalo.

To the ladies that feed department store brands, please, please do some research on the ingredients...you'll be horrified.
