I have the world's suckiest job. Ok maybe not the worlds but I know I could do better. I have my teaching cert in math and know I would be a great teacher I just can't seem to land a job. I am working as a nanny and basically maid at the moment and it is so un-gratifying. Sorry for the vent. Anyone know any long-term sub positions coming open soon?
Re: HATE MY JOB
That's a tough situation...I'm not really happy at work either and it's definitely frustrating!
Could you tutor or something in the meantime? Maybe at Sylvan or something?
What level math are you certified for?
I can't say anything definite, but just keep your eyes open. I know that in my district, which uses servingschools.org, we have 10-15 teachers at the high school alone retiring this year. I think one or two might be in math. I'm not sure what is going on in the schools for the rest of the district, but that's a lot of positions to open in just one school.
It's discouraging, but buff up your resume. Do sub work to get your foot in the door and gain recommendations. Be as qualified as you can be without costing the district more money (master's cost more than a bachelors, for example). And don't stop trying. I had a coworker that was an Ed Tech for years before finally landing her dream job, in our district. She applied for everything that she could. Interviewed whenever possible. And rubbed elbows whenever she had the option. In the end, it took a while, but it worked out in the end.
I can't offer any leads on job offers, but I can relate to the job frustrations, a little. I am a nanny too (and expecting as well), and at times feel like a maid or personal assistant. It can be extremely frustrating at times, especially when my child care philosophies differ from my boss, but most of the time I am very lucky with the little family I work for.
One thing my husband and myself remind me of when I am feeling overwhelmed and annoyed with the way things are going is the child is not mine, all I can do is provide her with the care I would want for my own little one. Plus she comes first, chores and errands that are asked to be done around the house can wait, especially if a princess tea party is being requested....
Were you hired through an agency? If so you may want to contact the director and ask for ways to deal with the frustrations you are experiencing, or help finding a different family..
Both of us work within your range around Portland, so there are districts that will be hiring.
I don't know you, so I feel like a b!tch for even bringing this up. However, how soon are you due? I ask because I think a district might be overwhelmed with the prospect of hiring someone if they are going to be leaving on maternity leave shortly after school starts this fall. If you are having the child over the summer then it is obviously not as much of an issue. But someone interviewing a pregnant woman, regardless of how legally right it is to do say, may have those kinds of thoughts. Again, sorry for being a b!tch. I'm just trying to help.
It's still early for districts to be posting their openings. I just happen to know of what is coming based on what I've heard in my own school. Also, the governor, who so many of us love so dearly (note the sarcasm), is rumored to be taking an ax to budgets everywhere, not just in schools. I would think schools would wait until they hear those numbers to decide who they are going to replace. For example, I know that there are two or three positions that would become vacant in my school that, if the budget is tight, would not be filled next year and the position would just be cut. Fortunately for you, math is not typically such a position. But you never know how bad the cuts will be and how far the schools will take it. I know the district next to mine had to lay off tons of teachers last year just to make ends meet. It's very scary.
Oh don't feel bitchy for asking. I planned it perfectly so that I would deliver right after school finished in the Spring and be ready to go for fall. I am a planner and know teaching is what I want to do. I also know there are politics involved so I planned very carefully. June 22 is my due date.
I am not a fan of the governors. Kill the trees and get rid of teachers is not how I would handle things.
