shopping online

I have had a problem finding clothes I like.  I am plus-sized and know that my selections are limited. I am taking DH out for dinner for his birthday to a nice steak house and was thinking of buying a new dress to wear (maybe a little sexy).  I decided to look online and found some I like.  However, I have never bought clothes online before and it makes me nervous b/c I will not know what they look like on me.

Do you shop for clothes online?  If so, do you often have to send things back?

Re: shopping online

  • I have only shopped online once and was not happy.  I ended up returning the shirt.  I am very picky about clothes and can hardly find stuff in stores I like and that fit.  I don't every buy clothes without trying them on.  I ususally end up going to a larger city with better clothes selections.  Of course, my other problem is I am cheap and won't buy from any of the big stores at all.  I stick to Khols, Pennys and Macys.  :-)  Good luck!  Be careful when you are shoping to check the return policy because not all places have free return shipping.  So you may get your money back but still pay up to 10 bucks to send the stupid thing back.

Hope you find what you are looking for!! Smile

  • I buy shoes online, but rarely clothing. Maybe a skirt now and then, and I used to buy t-shirts from Threadless, but those are easier. I can't buy something like a dress or pants without trying them on. Just seems like a bad idea.

  • I occasionally shop for clothes online...but ONLY from well known stores that I shop in regularly (i.e. Old Navy, Kohl's, Gap, etc.). The only thing I tend to pay close attention to when ordering online is the return policy. If I can return items purchased online to the store, then I feel more comfortable about purchasing before trying. If they make me ship it back to return it, then I am less likely to order it online....even if shipping is free.

I ordered an evening dress from David's Bridal before the wedding and wound up returning it. But it was the biggest pain in the rear b/c I had 2 weeks to return it, had to go online and fill out a form stating why I was returning it, to which I had to wait for a response saying that they would even take it back, and then I had to pay to ship it back.

  • In general, I'm a hands on shopper; I need to touch, try on, and see in person.

BUT, if I am familiar with how I fit into a certain brand's/store's clothing, I can shop online for clothes.  Mostly, I'd stick to stores with good return policies.  Ones where you can try and return in store at no shipping cost to you if the items you've purchased online don't work.

  • Considering that I buy maybe 10% of the clothes I try on, I would never shop online. Everything looks cute on models, but not me. If I weren't such a weird size, I'd probably shop online more, especially ebay for nwt jcrew items.

  • Thanks ladies.  It sounds like I am not alone in my fear of buying online.  I just don't understand who does it regularly.  I think I am going to keep looking in the stores for something that works.

  • If you buy online for big stores you can usually take it back to the store instead of mailing it online, those are usually the only places I buy online. Also some places let you ship for free to the store, I know Lane Bryant and JcPenny let's you do that.

On a side note, have you shopped at Torrid. It's a plus size store with an attitude. I'm hooked right now.  I'm not sure if they have them everywhere but you can check their website, they have some really cute and sexy stuff.

  • We do have Torrid here.  I went into their once and was thrown off of their sizing and got confused so I left.  I know I should have asked, but is their logic "If we size our clothes differently, then our customers won't really know how big they are?"

  • I have to second Torrid. I have found some pretty cute stuff there. And from what I've seen that staff is alway friendly and helpful. I also shop at Lane Bryant, but sometimes their hit or miss with "younger" looking clothes. But I've found some cute dresses. And depending on how fancy/ spendy you want to go sometime Davids bridal has really cute party dresses that don't look like bridesmaid dresses.

  • I buy regularly online, but only dresses, never pants, and only from brands I have tried on before. I started with going to Macy's and trying on a few brands I liked, that were too expensive in the store. I then looked for them online and bought the moment I noticed a sale. Since most brands keep the same sizing and shaping on their clothes, once you get the ones you know you look good in, you can safely buy them online.

Places like Ideeli.com have pretty nice sales and sometimes (at least once a week, I think) they have plus sizes too. Check them out.

  • I shop online for clothes and hardly ever have to send back.  It's from shops that I know, like Anthropologie or J.Crew.  I also know what I look good in and what looks terrible.  I look bad in spaghetti strap and halter, but good in crew neck and v neck. I use the sizing charts religiously and take item feedback into account, like whether it's best to order a size up.

Still, I'd much rather go to the store and try on because it's just more fun that way!
