QOTD-Friday

Have you been to a job where someone was trying to get you fired? What did they do? Were they successful?

Re: QOTD-Friday

  • no and no. i've always gotten along really well with coworkers. i'm good at biting my tongue when i don't get along with them, and picking up slack for others. i don't like work drama so i tend to be the peacekeeper.

  • I've never had a job where someone tried to get me fired, but when I was at Outback, they promoted me to bartender and one of the other guys who worked there (he'd been there longer than me) flipped out. He had a big hissy fit and threatened to quit if they didn't give him my spot behind the bar. They ended up promoting him also and then he crashed and burned as a bartender. He only lasted a month.

  • I have never had someone try to get me fired. At my current job and the one before that the position I filled was because the person before me could not get along with the team.

I get along with pretty much everybody and just come to work, get my stuff done and go home. I try to stay out of office politics.

  • Happily, no. I've always gotten along well with most of my coworkers.

On a related note, I tried to get someone fired once, because she called children in MY classroom (we shared a room, but had seperate classes) "stupid", "dumb" and said things like "Your mom must have been smoking W-E-E-D when she was pregnant with you." She was ridiculous, but she never said things like that in front of the parents, and even though admin knew it was going on, nothing was done.

  • Some of you may remember the job I had in Gainesville that was pure hell. I had a psychotic backwoods jealous hillbilly try to get my fired. I lasted almost four years and then quit on the spot when I found out she was stalking me and emailing my boss about my whereabouts.Thankfully, I already had the ball rolling with interviews on the job I have now and it has been the best decision I ever made.

  • Kind of. When I was a teenager, I worked at Express on Sundays only  because of my school schedule. The regular managers were fine with it, but then they hired a new manager who was unfriendly and a real hard ass. When she was put in charge of the schedule, she kept conveniently forgetting to schedule me week after week. I was pretty mousey back then so I didn't say anything for a while, then finally confronted her as to why I no longer had any hours. She pretended innocence and said she thought I was so busy with school and wanted a break. I found out later that she had waited until my lead manager had gone on vacation and processed termination papers for me as though I had quit. It wasn't that I had done anything wrong--she just didn't want to deal with me on the schedule one day a week. Until I told the lead manager how it had really transpired, she had no idea it had gone on and of course reinstated me.

Conversely, I have also tried to get someone fired, someone who was technically my boss but was more like a coworker. She had some personal problems and suddenly decided not to come to work consistently, and it wasn't that she was working from home--she just wasn't working. She developed all kinds of maladies and called in late, sometimes as late as 2 pm, from her bed... with someone else in it. I humored it in the beginning, knowing what she'd been through, but after a month without my lead boss really noticing, I got irritated since I was doing both of our jobs, alone, while she was out partying, and started logging her true work hours. Another month went by and she got into a huge blowout with the big boss; he then asked me something about her performance, and I gave him the bottom line--she'd been out of the office at least 2/3rds of the month (he'd been traveling). FIYERD.

  • Yes.  This time last year was pure hell for me.  My supervisor, my manager, and one of my coworkers became best buds all of the sudden.  We had a small office, so its not like they weren't friends before, but my supervisor just up and left his wife (who worked with us too) and these three started hanging out after work, partying at a bar close to my house in Navarre and just all around not making very good choices with their time outside of work.  Which wouldn't matter, until they started to want me to go with them, but I just wouldn't do it.  This went on for about 9 months.  I started getting in trouble because of what I would wear to work, my work capris were too short, my shoes weren't good enough, when I had been wearing the same clothes for 2 years and never having a problem.  It was all of the sudden like the same work that I had been doing for the last 2 years wasnt good enough and I kept on getting called out on it.  Everything I did had to be revised, re-edited, or just completely redone because it wasnt good enough, but my job description had never changed, I was doing the exact same things all this time before and not one thing was said.

Then last December, about 3 weeks before a cruise I had gotten approved was scheduled, my manager brings me into his office and tells me that I cant go on the cruise, even though I had my approval papers, unless I get this huge laundry list of things done.  I freaked out, but I got the shiz done and I was able to go.

For almost the whole nine months or so that this was going on I was looking for a new job, but nothing really met my qualifications.  Then in April of last year they fired me.  Everyone in the office except these 3 people were really upset about it.  The South End of the county office was actually trying to get my supervisor to move me down there because they wanted me for themselves.  They were shocked when I was fired. It was over a flyer that I had finished the Friday before and had set up to print Monday morning and then go out that afternoon.  I apparently did not collaborate with my manager enough and my coworker called her after I left and told her that I didn't finish the flyer when I had.

Getting fired before actually quitting was really a blessing.  I went on about 3 Nanny interviews and turned the jobs down because they weren't good enough.  I dont think I would've ever found anything good enough and I would still be stuck there if I hadn't been fired.  I found out later that my supervisor spent two days a week following me around during the work day to make sure I was doing what I was doing, but he could never find any dirt on me.  It was really an awful situation.  At one point my dad wanted to sue them over the cruise thing and the fact that my PTO had already be approved.  It sucked.

(Sorry it was a book!  I've never typed this whole situation out before!)

  • Not that I know of!

I will take full responsibility for getting someone fired though about a year and a half ago.  It was the person whose position Devon filled.  Imagine Roseanne Barr, but twenty years younger.  And in a skimpy tube dress.  At work.

  • no and no but I've been in jobs where I dont like the people I work with.

  • Yeah... it was about 5 months after I started.  I'm still with the company but it was a long and drawn out situation.  The other person in the situation ended up quitting so whatever... it was a learning experience.
