First Friday/ music friday

Tonight is music Friday downtown Lancaster. Many of the shops and art galleries are open until 9. Also through out downtown several musical performances. My question for you lovely ladies, do you take advantage of the events in your community? Do you have a special tradition, for example fireworks at longs park on 4th of July?

Re: First Friday/ music friday

  • Music Friday sounds nice!  When I lived in FL, they had Fridays on 5th (the name of the street downtown).  All the local shops downtown were open late, they had food, wine, music, etc.  We've gone to the Apple Festival in New Cumberland ever since I moved here--I always have a good time.  When we were over in Mechanicsburg we went to Jubilee Day, but since DH's best friend moved, it's not so easy to go to.  We can actually see the fireworks over the tree tops from Harrisburg here in Camp Hill...so need to go anywhere for the 4th, lol!  The only other thing we've done both years since I moved here is go and see the snow blowers on Roundtop.  My stepson thinks they are just too cool.

  • It's weird in a way that when people hear I'm from Lancaster they immediately think of the Amish and the outlets. But I feel like central pa has so much more than that to offer! Part of my New years resolution is to take advantage of the great stuff our area has to offer! Last year we went to this art fest in down town Harrisburg, I don't know what it was called but it really made me think.

  • Downtown York has something very similar to this.  It's the First Fridays from 4pm-9pm of the month all year round.  I haven't been there myself, but my coworker was there over the summer and really enjoyed it.  He's an artist, and a lot of the art galleries participate in it.  We really don't take advantage of the local activities...but does visiting local wineries count?!  Even though it isn't too local, but we like to go out to Gettysburg and visit the Hauser Estate Winery and the Adams County Winery.

  • I have been to a few First Fridays and I really enjoyed them.  I've never been to a music one.  If it were to warm up a bit I'd think about going tonight but I'm inside right now and freezing!!!  I loved when the had the pianos throughout the town that the community could play!

Normally we end up going to Longs Park on the 4th.  Also, my family has a cottage along the river and all the cottages purchase fireworks and then set them up on barges and take them into the middle of the river and we have our own private fireworks show which is awesome!

I agree, the older I get the more I try to do things that I would never have thought would have interested me, ie museums, art shows, wineries ( I would love to make my own wine.. it just seems fun)

Thanks for trying to make the board active!  This was fun.

  • I think visiting wineries counts!  :-)  We like to do that too, have been to Adams County Winery several times, we go at least once in September as we go to Gettysburg for our anniversary every year.  We love to stay at the Cashtown Inn there.

I was wondering about the Cashtown Inn.  I love the view from Hauser Estate.  It's not far from the Adams County Winery.  They have concerts (inside and outside) depending on the weather.  DH & I went there last year for our 1 year anniversary and I *might have* gotten a little tipsy over the wine tasting AND the bottle of wine that we drank outside with the block of cheese & crackers that we bought there.  I swear it was a whole block of cheese that we ate! And I never eat that much cheese. I told him next time, we're bringing a picnic instead of the cheese wedge.

  • I can't wait until Spring / summer to be outdoors again.  I love doing things like that, outdoor concerts, picnicking  etc. :)  I always get bummed during the winter.

I work right in downtown York, so DH and I go sometimes.  It's very cool, and often there is a theme.  For instance, I think it was in August, they had a pet themed one.  Everyone brought their dogs, and all the vendors had treats for the dogs and water bowls set out.
