I was wondering if there are any Calgary Nesties here that could tell me a little about the city. (Is there much to do, what do you like/dislike about the city, etc).
My husband got a job offer for Calgary and we are considering moving, but I do not know much about the city at all and I also don't know anyone there to ask about it.
Re: Any Calgary Nesties?
Hi! I'm born and mostly raised Calgarian so I'm partial to the city. It's changed since the boom and become much busier, but it is what you make of it. There are bad things like with any city but I don't understand why some people hate it. What I love is that we're an hour from the mountains and some great hiking, if you ski winter is great too. I do wish sometimes we lived on the west side so we were closer but I love our community even though it means I have a long commute to and from downtown. I feel safe in my community and there are lots of walking paths (important to me because we have a dog) and easy access to everything I need.
There are lots of restaurants, movie theatres, shopping malls, theatres / play companies, the opera, ballet, zoo, science center, museum, and family type activites.
I'm lucky, I have a great family doctor, the walk in clinics can be crowded, we have people who complain about long waits in the ER - although I'm not sure that's so different from other major cities in the country and I don't think everyone going to the ER NEEDS to be there but that's a digression. Crime is up, and some are violent, but so far things like home invasions seem to be targeted and I'm not comfortable downtown outside of business hours, but like I said, I feel safe where I live and really have no need to be downtown outside of work hours anyway because I have access to whatever I need / want close to home.
If you send me a PM with your email I'd be happy to chat more with you and answer any specific questions.
We moved to calgary 4 years ago. Love it. We've lived downtown (not a fan after work hours), the west side of the city, the far south and now the south-east near deerfoot.
I like the city. It has it's goods and bads like anywhere else. I feel safe where we live and walk my dog a lot on the paths. Downtown has a lot to offer during the day. It's easy to get to and transit is pretty good.
like kmpa said, feel free to PM me as well!

I moved to calgary from a very small town 10 years ago for school, met my hubby, and have no real complaints. I live in the NW, and work downtown. the transit system is pretty good (especially if you work downtown) and it's getting expanded. I like the area of the NW I live in (not deep NW), it's an older neighbourhood and the overall feel is nice. I don't like being downtown in the evening but there really isn't any need to be as most places are closed by 6pm (except the bars). there are a lot of great malls, great communities, and great areas.
what I don't like is how spread out it is, the different communities (like the SE and the NW) are so spread out that it seems like they're in different cities. and the snow removal isn't that great, but that's because mother nature likes to give us chinooks for a week followed by -40 for a week, rinse and repeat.
overall though, it's a great city, same problems as everywhere else. except as PP said we're close to the mountains and hiking, and as much as people will deny it the Stampede is a damn fun time to be in Cow Town.
