What color are the walls currently painting that you are putting a swatch on? That can have an affect on how it looks on the wall versus how it looks on the swatch.

Also, how large of a swatch did you paint?  When painting my craft room, I tried 6 blues and I hated every single swatch I painted.  Steve said enough was enough and I had to pick one and at least try it.  For the first time ever, the swatch was actually darker than when the entire room was painted.  I'm kind of pissed we didn't take a leap of faith and paint the entire long wall in the basement the blue color.

Just some things to consider.

Re: Ana

  • I agree, your patch definitely has to be big enough that you can get an idea of what the room would look like.  Also wait until they completely dry and see it at night with just the room light as well as during the day with sunlight.

What colors are you looking at?  Any SW actual colors I am probably familiar with:) We painted one of our guestrooms a lavendar color and I tried probably 6 different ones and ended up with one that I didn't really think I'd like on the swatch but loved in the room.

  • Thanks Brie and Andre for the suggestions! The block I painted is pretty big but it's only on the one wall. I am pretty sure that my next step will be painting it on the other 3 walls to see what it would look like, since I think the lighting on each wall is different? Does that make sense?

Also, andrea, do you have pictures/name of the lavender color you used? TIA :)

  • You should definitely do that.  That was the hardest thing for me.  I like one color on 2 of the 3 walls, but liked another on the 3rd wall.  Majority ruled.

The good thing is it's paint.  It can be changed.

I'm happy to email or PM you tonight when I get home and and can double check all the ones we tried.  Pretty sure we went with SW #6268 Veiled Violet for the room, we also tried beguiling mauve SW #6269.  We had probably 4 other lavendars but I can't remember.  I was looking more for a greyish purple color and they ended up being a lot more lavendar than I'd planned, but I love it!

  • I think you'll love it, it's the perfect color.  If lighting isn't too terrible in the basement tonight, I'll take a picture of the room too.

You're welcome!  As the resident paint guy wifey, I feel the need to spread the love when needed!
