Diaper Rash - At a loss

2 weeks ago we started switching Caroline from Nutramigen formula to regular formula. 7 oz of regular formula plus 23 of the Nutramigen. After a few days she got a horrible rash so we stopped. It took 5 days for the rash to clear up and she was in a lot of pain from it. She's never had a diaper rash before.

This week, we started it up again but only giving her a total of 4oz of regular formula. Day 4 and the rash has come back. I know you'd think "well obviously she's still allergic." and I'm in agreement but then my mom just pointed out that 2 weeks ago, and now she is cutting a tooth.

Just want to bang my head against the wall b/c the timing for this sucks. Only option is to stop the formula. *sigh* Think we're headed back to the gastroenterologist :(

Re: Diaper Rash - At a loss

  • Are you SURE its the formula and not just some fluke that the rash started at the same time?  Have you tried putting her in disposables to see if that clears it up?  I ask only because I know that A LOT of us have had diaper rash issues lately with cloth diapers.

I am beginning to wonder if there is something bigger going on here.  I mean seriously, why are so many of us having so many recurring issues?

  • I DID wonder if I was suffering from the mysterious BG diaper rash. The last time she had the rash I had her in disposables immediately and it still took days to clear up. I had her in the CD's for a week and she stayed clear and then timing with the new formula and tooth she has the rash again. Her poop seems to look like it used to look when she was newborn and was on breast milk so I was thinking maybe that was the lactose, but my mom said that cutting teeth can lead to different poop, rashes etc. I wish this was something the Dr could figure out but there isn't anything he can do. It started up today right after she pooped, literally over an hours period. Just changed her again and she was screaming, poor thing:(
  • cutting teeth can absolutely change a usually normal kid into a pooping, sad, rashy mess.  BUT -- since it's easiest to try the diaper thing first, try a day of disposables (while continuing the new formula), and see if the rash clears.  If it doesn't look any better, go back to the BGs and stop the formula.  If it STILL doesn't look any better, I'd blame the teeth.

Owen has had some wicked awful rashes in the BGs, but they are always in warm or hot weather.  I think a big problem with them is that they just don't breathe very well.

  • I think it's the formula.  When T started solids, she got, and still has gotten, really really bad rashes.  Like her bum bleeds.  And the only thing I can attribute it to is the acidity of her food.  So, we just used CA baby at every change for a while.  Now her bum is better and only gets the rash periodically.  I think her skin just needed to get used to the different food.  but that is my two sense and not necessarily right

  • :-(  I don't have any advice but to add that aren't these the joys of parenthood?  Besides washing the crap out of your BG's, I'm not sure what else to do.  That was Abby's issue, but she was already on mostly solids and isn't very sensitive to stuff.

  • Poor Caroline! I have two different kids here at my daycare that every time they start to cut a tooth they get HORRIBLE diaper rashes.

It is so hard trying to figure out kids!!

  • It's so frusterating when there are a few possible causes and you have to try to figure it out. Eli used to get horrible diaper rash when he cut new teeth, so that could definetly be an option. Hope it clears up soon and you can figure out the cause easily!
