Long story short, we have been living in my parents? house for the last two years. First b/c my Mom was supposed to moved down to NC with my Dad and now b/c we are waiting for our new townhouse to be built. So it turns out that our house is taking much longer to be built then we had hoped. We had a particularly bad night last night. It took us over 2.5 hours to get home, basically we are just completely over living in central NJ and we don't think we can stick it out until the projected closing of April 30th. DH suggested we sublet a furnished studio in Manhattan and go home on the weekends until our new house is built. It would mean giving up the money we have been saving for new furniture, but I think we could swing it. WWYD? I'm not sure how we should proceed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Ugh.
Re: Sublet in manhattan?
Hm...that's a tough one cuz i would be totally annoyed with that commute! I have a friend who comes in from PA and she basically doesn't even bother when it snows! She gets to work from home a lot. I would definitely try to make the best of it and get a lot of reading and crocheting done.
Would you also save money on commuting? Cuz that could be worth it! But i think a furnished studio isn't going to be too cheap...it'll depend on the neighborhood...
Do you normally have such a rough time commuting? Or is it only when the weather is bad?

Finally! A Married Bio!!
As tempting as it would be to sublet, I'd stick it out till April. Keep furniture shopping and finding things that the money you are saving by commuting will go towards:)
If you had some extra money, maybe when you know there is a storm coming, you and your husband can "treat" each other to a hotel night in the city once and awhile.
This! I would stick it out.

That's really tough. If you're doing it just to cut the commute and you won't really enjoy the city itself (which I'm assuming because you wouldn't stay here on weekends), if anything I'd do somewhere outside of Manhattan to cut costs (maybe Hoboken or JC?). It isn't worth it to me to pay Manhattan prices just to have somewhere to sleep here. Particularly if it means less new furniture.
But if you think you'll really be able to take advantage of what Manhattan has to offer, it might be a fun thing to do for a few months. Living here is very, very different from just working here/living nearby, and could be worth trying out for a bit, even at the expense of new furniture.
So I guess what I'm saying is that it all depends on how much you think you'll get out of it, besides fewer commuting headaches.
Hi Jen,
This is a personal decision. Will you be happy with a new house but no furniture for a while? If so and it is going to save your sanity, then get a sublet. But if it were me, I'd stick it out. The end is near. But it's not me and you should do what is best for you and your marriage.

Thanks, ladies! Especially subdola for the tip on the sublet. We decided to stick it out, even though the extended closing is now May 30th.
Hopefully, we can make it through?
Maybe you can put up pictures of your future furniture to help keep you motivated...
Haha! Good idea.
