I missed the memo when I was pregnant about the importance of getting a good pump. My mom bought me a Lansinoh at Wal-Mart because it's about half the price of a Medela...don't do it. The women at the hospital (nurses, etc.) tried to convince me to buy a Medela Pump in Style through them and see if insurance would cover it and I thought they were just trying to sell me something.
After three months of using the Lansinoh it is taking me twice the amount of time to get out what I need (25 minutes to get 4 oz out while double pumping). I decided to check and see if insurance would still cover the PIS and I bought it yesterday and came home and used it- so much better, quieter and more comfortable.
Do NOT skimp in this area!
Re: Pg ladies: if you plan to need a pump
thanks melissa. my sister rec'd a medela, too. i don't remember which one though. i'll have to check about insurance covering it, that'd be awesome.
i also heard that you shouldn't buy it right away in case you have problems BFing. do you agree?
Thanks for the info! I just bought the Ameda Purely Yours Ultra. My sister uses this one and loves it.... and she pumps a lot at work and such, so I figure it must be good. It's normally $299 and I got it for $170 because I used a 15% off BRU coupon, 10% registry completion coupon, and found this $50 mail in rebate online: http://c1.diapers.com/images/pdf/ameda-breast-pump-rebate-2011.pdf
My insurance wouldn't cover any of the cost
Yes and no. I needed mine in the hospital (due to May being in the NICU- I couldn't nurse right away and then as often so I pumped to be sure my milk would come in.), but most hospitals have pumps you can rent. A lot of moms I know used their pump to get their supply up to ensure they could keep nursing. It's also nice to have a decent freezer supply before you go back to work while you figure out how much baby eats during the day vs. how much you can pump. So you should be able to wait a few weeks, but don't wait until the day you go back to work.
I have a Medela pump that I got from my sister (cleaned & replaced parts). Did your insurance cover it?
Wow! That is great. I haven't heard of a lot of insurance companies covering pumps.
The ladies at the hospital acted like it was really common, especially since I'm with Wellmark. It's covered under Durable Medical Equipment. I had to have a prescription for it. I'd encourage anyone to look into it!
I agree. I've got a Medela Freestyle. Mine is the handfree, battery operated version. I love the mobility of it. I can wear it around the house to multitask.
I wish that my insurance had covered the cost.
