organizing cd's - boxes? baskets?
Any suggestions to organize music cd's would be appreciated. Right now they are on a cd display rack - that definitely needs to go! So do any of you have any fun ideas about what to store them in? I'm thinking baskets or boxes, but other ideas would be helpful too!
Thanks.
Re: organizing cd's - boxes? baskets?
It depends on how much space you have and how many cds we're talking about. If you have a general collection of about 20 cds, then either way would be fine. It all depends on whether the dust of a basket would bother you. A cd storage box would keep them contained and dust free (picture below).
If you have a collection of hundreds of cds like we do, then baskets wouldn't work. If we were to try to hide them away somewhere, I'd get some cd storage boxes and try to get them on a closet shelf. For now, we have an entire Billy bookcase from Ikea filled up. It looks like the pic below but just one bookcase, not four.

my DH put all of our CD's in a binder. I think we still have the cases in the garage in a box, unless he finally threw them away when we moved.
He just put our DVD's in a binder, too, since we got rid of our dvd display.
I think he got the binder at Target for around $30-40 or so and it holds at least 200-300 in each case.
This one is $50 - http://www.target.com/Atlantic-Metro-352-Blu-ray-Binder/dp/B000NAC56E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&searchView=grid3&keywords=cd%20binder&fromGsearch=true&sr=1-1&qid=1295478424&rh=&searchRank=target104545&id=Atlantic%20Metro%20352%20Blu-ray%20Binder&node=1038576%7C1287991011&searchSize=30&searchPage=1&searchNodeID=1038576%7C1287991011&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&frombrowse=0
This CD organizer from Brookstone is possibly the greatest organizing tool for discs! It is convenient, super portable, sleek, neat and affordable - $59.95 - and I bet you'll have fun setting it up and using it for years to come! Good luck in your search and with your organizing adventures.

We have over 3000 CD's, so I have tried every way to organize that you can imagine. Most of our CD's have been converted to mp3 and stored on an external harddrive. However we like to keep our favorites or old ones that haven't yet been converted accessible. We have 2 of these:

Whoa, sorry for the long url...anyway these are from Target, we got them when they were on sale for $250 and free shipping. You need to wait for free shipping which is pretty often b/c I think the shipping is super high (they're actually on free shipping right now). They come assembled which was HUGE for us, as most similar models at the same price required assembly. They store a ton of CD's, unsure exactly how many , and many of ours are now in slim cases to make even more room. All the rest that aren't in these are in large plastic bins in the basement.
Re. the CD binders....we used to have CDs in these but noticed that they seemed to scratch much more quickly. After talking to other people and looking online, this seems to be a common issue. Now if you really just want to store them efficiently and don't really plan to listen to them (ie. you have converted them to mp3 and use the files to play them but just can't part with the actual cd) then by all means, put them in a case and under a bed or in a closet. But if you plan to listen to them fairly frequently, then the repeated sliding in and out of the case will scratch them over time. Plus if you ever plan to try to sell the cd's you need them in their original cases so that's why we keep them all.
Re. the media cabinet we chose (see above), we like it b/c it had the largest capacity for it's size (b/c there is storage in the doors as well so essentially double the storage for the same size cabinet), and I prefer cabinets with doors b/c I don't like the look of exposed media, but that's just my opinion.
My parents bought me one like this. I finally got a chance to go through and put my CD/DVDs in and I really like it. I plan on purchasing another one or two.
