**GracefulMeadow**

I just want to say that I totally feel your pain about being on call all the time.  I also have a job that rotates on call and it's awful.  I work in a nuclear medicine department that has 24/7 call and have been there 5 years, and much of that 5 years there have only been 2 of us taking call.

I worked 10 hours with no lunch on Thursday, then went in at 10pm till 1 am, then worked again 5:30 am to 5:30 pm and am on call again until Sunday.  And to top it off my co-worker was sick the first week of January so I had 8 days straight of call and working the department short staffed by myself.  It feels like you can never catch a moment to yourself.  I also feel the same as you when you say that you are just happy to have a job, because that's how I feel too.  As bad as it gets sometimes I try to always tell myself that I am getting a paycheck every two weeks and for that I should be grateful.

So I just wanted to tell you that you are not alone and if you ever want to vent, I'm here :-)

Re: **GracefulMeadow**

  • oh, Daisy. You have a sucky schedule too! It is definitely not fun. Luckily, we have 4 people who share the pager duties (I work in a fast-paced IT support job for an insurance comapny). So 2 weeks per month im on call. One is primary, another is backup in case the primary in unavailable. It totally sucks b/c I have to work my normal hours (which end up being at least 50-60 hours of normal work per week, and then the 24/7 on-call duties on top of that. So on some weeks, i've worked over 80 hours, sometimes almost 24 hours straight on one day!

And yes, we should both be happy we actually HAVE jobs, but that doesn't mean we have to like it lol. As happy as I am, there is no way i can stay in this job for the rest of my life. It literally takes over my life, even when im NOT on call, because I seem to be the go-to person in my department for certain issues with our Production environment applications.

Oh well....I can't imagine doing this for 5 years. I've been here 2.5 and its already aging me!!!

Thanks for the vent....im actually supposed to be working now hehe

OH p.s. were you on theknot? I dont remember your SN....unless you changed it when you got on here. I'm Kim. :)

  • yeah I was on there as Kmgreen2 but changed cause it included my old last name.

5 years and I feel like i'm 27 going on 80.  lol.  They added a 32 hour part time position and I actually might apply for it because at least it would be less hours during the week.  And it would be a possibility to maintain when we start TTC and have a baby.

It is just so frustrating feeling like you're tied ball and chain to your job.  Are you currently looking for another job?

  • oh, Kristen, right? I guess i missed your post about making a new SN :)

32 hours/week sound AMAZING. I wish i could do that w/o seriously hurting our financial stability.

I'm not actively looking for a new job right now. I'm going to wait until our annual review/raise period completes and see if i get anything decent. If not, then i'll be sticking my resume out there and trying to find something new. When you work 80 hrs and only get paid for 40 with very little monetary incentive, it never leads anywhere happy. Lol.

  • oh my goodness they don't pay you overtime for all that extra work?????

That should be illegal.  I would definitely tell then in your review that you feel you deserve a significant raise and if they aren't willing that you will be looking for another job.   If they know that they will probably be willing to work with you so they don't lose you.

Yes, the glory of being salaried. lol. My boss knows how much work  I do that is critical to our applications functioning correctly, but I can't really tell that that if they dont give me a good raise that i'll leave. I know that sounds weird, but theyre in the process of outsourcing our department and I feel as if i make the request/demand, then i'll be targeted for the next wave of layoffs. It sucks. I really do need to look for another job. Basicaly if i get a raise at our review time in May, my job is pretty much safe. If not, i'll be getting laid off anyways so i might as well look for a new job!
