a little delayed, but. . .

I have "honeymoon" tickets!

Backstory:  When we got married, both of us were in graduate school and, given that we decided it would be an excellent idea to get married in the middle of fall semester, we couldn't take off for a proper honeymoon.  His sister bought us a giftcard to a fancy hotel in the Lancaster area of Pennsylvania, so we spent a long weekend, but that was it.

DH's family is Irish (as in, both grandparents on his dad's side came to the US as teenagers, and there are still a lot of aunts and uncles and cousins there).  So of course he'd love to go back whenever he can.  I've never left the country in my life, but I've had a fascination with Ireland since childhood.  So we decided to save all of our pennies, and plan a big vacation for summer 2011.  Combination "honeymoon"/graduation trip/pre-TTC trip.

We've been watching ticket prices www.kayak.com for months.  Every airport between DC to NYC, Dublin/Shannon/Cork/London. Today, we found tickets for half the price they have been.  Road trip from Newark to  Dublin, $510.  We'll stay one night at my in-laws in New York the night before our trip, but it's well worth it.  Next up--flight from Dublin to London, and researching hotels!

24 days in Europe, here we come.  So far, the itinerary is London, Dublin, Cork, and two little towns near Cork--the one his grandparents grew up in, and the one they sailed from when they moved to the US.

Suggestions, anyone?  Alicia?

This is the "once-in-a-lifetime" part of the trip.

I work in a school, and have a full month off in the summer (less than most school employees, but I'm not a teacher).

DH is graduating from grad school this spring, so if he has to, he'll just start his job after we return.

The stars will never align this way, giving us a full month to play with for vacation time, again.

  • Very cool! I would suggest Galway too. On one of my trips to Ireland we just rented a car and drove the west coast. It was so cool. If you are going to London I might suggest a day trip or two to other English towns like Bath or Oxford. Paris is just a train ride away too, you could do a couple days there.

  • Also check Ryanair for flights from Dublin to London. I can't remember if Easy Jet flies from there either.

  • Ok i'm so jealous!!!!!!

24 days thats amazing.. You should drive from London up through Wales (see Stonehenge)  and go to Edinburgh Scotland. I have been dieing to get to Scotland and Ireland..

I have done London and Paris and I loved both. So much to see and do.

Def check out Rick Steves travel books and dvds .. Have fun planning

  • I second Galway Bay, beautiful!  We flew from London to Dublin on Aer Lingus, so that's another one to check for flights.  It's a short trip.

I also second Bath for a day trip.  Beautiful.

I am jealous!  I only did a long weekend in Dublin with my mom back in college, so I definitely want to go back and take DH.

  • Wow! I'm jealous! Sounds like it'll be an amazing trip!

  • Awesome! Good for you two for recognizing the opportunity and seizing it! I've never been, so I have no rec's. But enjoy!!
  • That sounds like an awesome trip!!! You all will have so much fun.

We did London for our honeymoon and we loved it. If you guys are into history then there is so much to do there. The Tower, Westminster Abbey, St Pauls Cathedral. Some people think it is a waste but we did the London Eye and I liked that we got to see the whole city from that view. We did some daytrips. Bath was awesome. If you go there, go to Sally Lunns Buns. It is supposed to be the oldest restaurant in England. We also did Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, and Stratford upon Avon. Let me know if you need any more suggestions or have questions.

    I heart Ben!!
