nursery flooring???

What do you have for flooring in your nursery?  Carpet, what kind? Hard flooring, what type?

Right now, we've got an old carpet which won't match the colors we'll (someday) do the room in.  We're going for a tropical beach theme (inspired by the sunset on our honeymoon in Cozumel, Mexico), and the carpet is grey.  We've replaced a lot of the carpet in the house with laminate flooring, due to my allergies.  The budget for any home-improvement project is tiny with the baby on the way (and DH needing a new vehicle, which is another story...)

Any recommendations for where to get affordable flooring/carpet?  Are the big chain stores cheaper than local businesses?

Re: nursery flooring???

  • Marden's....you can usually find some good stuff at a decent price...if not cheap.  Maybe try lumber liquidator's if you are going that route.

  • I have my eye on some laminate flooring at Mardens.

We have carpet in the nursery because I renovated that room before I met Seth and didn't want to put in ANOTHER floor. I would not go with carpet. I have definitely had to spot shot out some poop stains.

  • Owen's room has hardwoods (we live in a 120-year-old house, so that's just par for the course).  I went crazy trying to find an affordable rug that I liked and was easy to clean, and in the end, went with three smaller "shag" rugs from JC Penney.  They're machine-washable, and wicked cheap.  They don't seem to have the bright colors that I bought anymore, but I didn't look that closely at the site:

  • We got hardwood flooring from Mardens.  Labor was free since DH is a carpenter :)

  • sooo...  you're telling me that I'm not totally crazy for thinking of putting laminate in his room too? Stick out tongue I was wondering if it would be too hard of a surface for a baby, although it's in most of the rest of the house now...  those shag rugs look perfect.

The laminate we've bought has been from Lumber liquidators, and DH laid it himself in our bedroom - and he did a good job.

  • We have the same floor in the boys room that we have in the rest of the house, the only room in the house that has carpet is our bedroom and I HATE it!! I hate carpet, but since we are renting there isn't much I can do about it.. we do now have a little car rug thing that MIL bought for us, that doesn't go with anything in their room but they like cars, and I am not putting it in the living room so until we get a separate playroom, the little road rug stays...

  • Marden's can be hit or miss, depending on how much flooring you need-- although the one in Lewiston has a pretty decent selection.

When my parents renovated their house, they went to Lumber Liquidators, because they wanted something more particular and they got a great deal on it even though it was wood and not laminate-- plus, there was enough that they could buy extra for possible future repairs (i.e. a heavy pan gets dropped on the flooring in the kitchen).

Ikea has some affordable laminates, as well. You may want to check them out-- although I wouldn't recommend ordering online if they charge a huge "handling" fee (I don't know if they increase the charge for big items like flooring or if it's the same $10 handling fee + whatever shipping costs).

  • We currently have carpeting, which I am okay with, for now. When we first started converting Delia's room from the X-men room, I looked into affordable flooring alternatives and I found a lot of websites suggesting cork floors. It looks pretty neat, and they say it is a good noise and heat insulator. I am pretty sure they sell it at Lumber Liquidators for a decent price too...

The only reason we didn't choose an alternative was because of a rather difficult summer financially and mentally. Oh and once the X-men game was out of the room and we could once again see a majority of the carpet, it didn't look as bad as we had previously thought it might...

  • Guess we're the exception. In the apt we had hardwood in Caroline's room, but here at the house we put carpet in the bedrooms. The living areas are all hardwood or travertine so we wanted a soft place to play in the bedroom. Caroline's crawling actually really took off when she was allowed to room all over on the carpet. She would slide off the rugs when she wanted to start climbing the wall etc. So , I'm happy with our carpet. I actually wish, with her trying to stand on her own etc. that our living room was carpet for the time being.

I was worried about allergens etc. but I clean like a mad woman and always get the carpets professionally cleaned once a year so I'm not too worried.

  • We have a mediocre throw rug from Home Depot or Lowes in the nursery.  I'd prefer to have carpet, though with pee/ poo/ and vomit, I'm sure it's a lot harder to clean.  But for midnight feedings and kid playing, carpet would be nice.

However, we have all hardwood floors otherwise, and in our living room we got those interlocking, primary color foam puzzle pieces and it's worked great.  Yes, they attract hair and dirt because they are static magnets, and James likes to pull off the edges, making sweeping the puzzle piece sides a nightmare.  But he can roll around and fall and go nuts on them without us worrying about installing a permanent or expensive solution in a house we won't be in forever.
