Dishwasher Problem

I have a major problem (well major for me)  I wash my dishes off before putting them in the dishwasher (at least 15 yrs. old)  I just noticed a grease like build-up in the bottom of it (GROSS)  Some of it was on my dishes.  What can I do to clean it?  Please tell me I do NOT need a new one!  Oh, and I use liquid detergent.  Thanks so much!

Re: Dishwasher Problem

  • This is just a wild guess, but maybe try running it with just the detergent and no dishes in it?  That works for a clothes washer, so maybe it would for a dishwasher too.  There might also be some type of product that is meant for cleaning them out.
  • Is the grease on the trap? Some of them are removable. You could also run it without dishes and put in a couple of tablespoons of vinegar once it starts. I know that removes the smell in them, but I'm not sure if it would break down grease.
  • Run it empty with 4 cups of vinegar.  We do this about once every couple of months.  It works.

  • Although I haven't tried this yet I've heard run it with no dishes and a detergent spot loaded with Tang powder.  Yup, That fantastic orange drink from when we were kids.
