Does anyone take this? I've heard it can help with mild blues and anxiety so I thought I'd give it a try. I picked up a bottle at Whole Foods yesterday but I did some review searching last night and got nervous (mainly it says you shouldn't drink while taking it).
It also says not to mix it with other meds because it could lesson their effectiveness. I'm not on BCP anymore (don't get excited - we're still a big ways away).
Thoughts?
Re: St. John's Wort?
The major concerns with St. John's Wort is interaction with other substances-- when used with alcohol, it can increase the effects of alcohol on your central nervous system, essentially making you hit that black-out stage faster. With anti-depressive medications, it can lead to psychosis or seizures.
It's not good to have if you're pregnant, as it is harmful to the fetus and to little children (so obviously, keep it out of their reach-- that means furry children, too, of course). It stays in your body for a little over 24 hours, so when you ARE trying to conceive, you may want to be sure and stop taking it a while before you seriously start so that you've got no chance of having it in your system when you get pregnant.
Those are the two biggest concerns. Just be careful if you take anything else with it-- even other herbal supplements or things like chamomile tea.
Any questions still? Talk to your doctor, because s/he will know even more (I hope). The information above is what I've learned in nursing school/clinicals so far and what I dug up from the Davis Drug Guide...
Hope that helps!
