Hey.. What type of sneakers do you use for running and strength training? Do you wear the same pair? My running sneakers are so old and I am afraid they are causing my siatic (sp) pain. I want to get something but don't want to spend a ton of money. I saw these on Amazon (b/c I see a lot of people wearing asics so I thought I'd give them a try). I have always bought Nike but I notice a lot of runners with Asics. What are your thoughts? I am putting this on H&F to get their opinons too.

I wear Brooks. Honestly the best thing to do for running shoes is to go to a running store (not a sporting goods store) and get fitted. Every foot is different. They will look at your foot and gait and fit the shoe for you. I pronate a lot when I step so I need shoes to correct that. A good pair of running shoes is really an important investment in keeping running enjoyable and pain free. It is pricier up front, but once you are fitted you can buy subsequent pairs online for much cheaper.
For lifting I use an old pair of running shoes. I don't want to wear out my running shoes (and since I still can't run I am definitely not wearing them out right now). I have heard that the best thing for lifting is flat bottom shoes like Chuck Taylors because they don't angle your foot in any way. I eventually plan to get a pair. That is for straight lifting though. If you are doing other things with more jumping and/or moving then I would probably go with a cross trainer.
That's exactly what they told me on H&F. I guess I just always assumed that getting fitted was more for people with arch support issues or something. So I googled a local shop and there's one right up the road that I'll go check out this afternoon. H is home with me today so I'm going to try to get out for a bit.
Another thing, I really don't want to spend a lot of $$ but I want a new pair of sneaks!
I spent $100 on my new running shoes. It was hard to do, but so worth it as they totally solved my hip bursitis problem.
What really sucks is that just mere weeks after I bought them I hurt my knee and they have been sitting in the box for months now without much use just taunting me.
Wow no kidding.. I know it takes a while to heal from injuries because you don't want to keep straining it and stuff. I hope that you aren't pushed so far back on your running.. All that hard work to start over? You've been swimming though, so I'm guessing that will help with your stamina (sp?).
I wish I had a workout buddy who lived close by that was as motivated as me. H is all set and it sucks doing it alone! All the people at my gym are in their 50's.
I am guessing that I am going to have to practically start over when I can run again, but I at least know I can do it now. I mean when I started running last April I didn't think I could actually run more than a quarter mile. I am sure swimming is helping me stay in shape, but it also will be hard on my legs to come back. Swimming just isn't the workout for the legs that running is. Oh well.
It would be nice to have a workout buddy too, but with swimming it doesn't matter since I am in the pool with my head in water the whole time. Plus I don't think anyone else is crazy enough to get up that early with me.
