If you pack your lunch...

What do you usually bring?  I've decided to start bringing my lunch to work to save money and calories from finding their way to settle on my thunder thighs.  I did pretty good last week - brought my lunch every single day - and I'm sitting here at my desk eating today's lunch now.  But I'm getting bored with sandwiches.  I had PB&J every day last week.  Today I'm eating turkey and I'm just not feelin' it.  I should also say that leftovers aren't much of an option b/c my husband is a piggie and never leaves any.

What are your favorite quick and easy lunches?

  • I used to bring those frozen meals that you steam (some were actually pretty good). You could always do a sub or pita type thing too.

  • Since I've been trying to lose weight I've been brining lunch and trying not to eat junk.  Here's what I've had recently.

    - Wrap with a wheat tortilla, cream cheese, ham, turkey pastrami and tomatoes.  Rolled it up and sliced it in half, that was really good.

-Salad with tomatoes, avocado, cucumber, carrots and FF Ranch.

    - Progresso soup, most are low cal.

    - Healthy Choice or lean cuisine frozen meals are my go to lunch when I'm too lazy to prepare anything.

  • My husband will eat huge portions too, so what I do is ask him not to eat a big plate of whatever so I can have some for lunch or just put a little aside in a container for work.

My lunch (which I bring everyday), consists of salad, leftover ravioli (from dinner last night), and an apple. You could always try wraps, maybe homemade soup or stew.

  • Sometimes I just have to tell H that I want leftovers for lunch the next day. :)

Other stuff: salads with grilled chicken, wraps, soup (homemade usually), mini pizzas made on a pita with sauce, cheese and herbs (in toaster oven, but microwave would work), or what I call the ghetto-style mexican pizza. On a soft taco shell melt some cheese (toaster oven) then top it with salsa.

I eat a lot of sandwiches but I'll switch it up by putting them on deli thins or bagel thins instead of bread.

I keep a few of those 100 calorie packs in my drawer at work but I'll usually bring string cheese and an apple or applesauce to go with lunch.

  • As far as leftovers go, I put some lunch portions in tupperware while I'm dishing out the meal on our dinner plates.  I used to cook meals specifically for lunches on the weekends, portion them out, and freeze them.  When I don't have those stockpiled in the freezer, I buy those soups from Campbell's that you microwave in the container - they don't need to be refrigerated, and there are a few flavors that are low-calorie that I like, so I don't wind up eating the same thing every day.

  • I pack leftovers from dinner sometimes. Other times, I'll pack turkey sandwiches, or chicken salad sandwiches. Sometimes DH makes me chicken caesar salads.
  • i usually have either leftovers, frozen meals, or a sandwich (mixing it up w/ meats and the type of breads i'll use).  then ill bring in some fruits that i portion out over the weekend for my work week and then a sweet 100 cal snack as a dessert!

i get bored easily w/ the same meals too so that's why i try to mix up day to day what i bring...hope that helps!

  • I do a lot of leftovers - but I also cook enough for 4 people most nights - sometimes more.  DH eats big portions, but there is still enough @ the end of the meal for both of us to have lunch the next day, mostly because I dish out the plates & pack up the leftovers.

With the GD, I have to be careful about carbs, so I eat a lot of deli thins or thin buns.  There is an 'earthgrains' brand, I think, that is pretty good.  I store up Boca Burgers or the fake chicken patties - heat one up throw it on a bun and I'm good.  I also buy the Campbells Soup-at-hand (like the ones LauraT mentioned) and also the tuna & crackers packs by chicken of the sea and keep them in my drawer at work.  The pre-packaged stuff is okay, but always high in sodium.  I think leftovers or salads are generally your best bet if you want to keep it healthier.

I also make a quick & dirty chicken salad - just cook off the boneless/skinless breasts, then chop them up and add mayo, celery, salt & pepper.  Not fancy, but does the job.  And one pack of chicken will feed both of us for several days worth of lunches.

  • Hubby is the lucky one they gets to take our leftovers for lunch, which I usually don't mind. I generally have either frozen meals, sandwiches, or sometimes soup, like others have said. I try to include some kind of fruit when we have it and a granola bar our maybe some chips. I also like the single serve french bread frozen pizzas on occasion, but that's not healthy at all! :)

These are good too.  The Sara Lee ones are awful.

And I really like the Thomas' Bagel Thins.  Again - Sara Lee brand is yuck.

  • Frozen meals, pita sandwiches, stuff like that. I hate leftovers so that is not an option for me.
  • I used to bring frozen meals like PP, but I figured it's still not cost effective (although it is cheaper than buying out everyday in the city).

I try to mix it up as much as possible, especially by bringing in leftovers from the night before. If your husband is a piggy, definitely make that much extra the night before.

I usually bring rolled oats with raisins and cinnamon (just add hot water). If I'm feeling ambitious I'll combine oats with some peanut butter, soy milk, chocolate chips, freeze overnight & eat cold for what some bloggers call a "breakfast cookie". Other days I'll do yogurt with granola and fruit on the side (mixing together when it's lunchtime). Salads are always tasty and easy (if I'm lazy & don't feel like chopping veggies spinach + feta does the trick). I usually try to accompany each main lunch item with something like a light yogurt, crackers, fruit, granola bar, etc.

  • In the winter I usually bring soup - I make a big pot Sunday and eat it most days the following week.

In the summer I bring salads with different veggies every week, and grilled chicken or salmon or shrimp thrown on top.

Some days I do sandwiches - tuna, chicken salad, egg salad, seafood salad, PB&J.

Also frozen morningstar burgers sans buns - I'll do those and a tomato/cucumber salad or something along those lines.

Since MFD eats a ton of leftovers, I also make for four or six people instead of two.
