Does anyone know about Medicaid?

I have a PG friend who is on Medicaid and unemployed. She was just offered a job and will be making a little over $300 a week, but doesn't want to take it because she thinks she will lose her benefits and cannot afford all the doctor visits, etc without them. I told her to call and find out but she had trouble getting through and I am afraid she is just going to give up and not take the job. So, does anyone know if she can keep her benefits if she is employed? My older sister said that you cannot lose benefits if you are already pregnant, but I am not sure if this is true.

Re: Does anyone know about Medicaid?

  • Since she is already PG she will be able to keep her benefits until she delivers. It is a pre-existing  condition so no insurance will cover it.
  • She might lose benefits if she takes the job. Pregnancy is not ever considered pre-existing and no insurance can deny you new coverage because you are pregnant. I would hate for her to not take the job because of the pregnancy because jobs are so hard to come by. I know you can still get medicaid for your pregnancy if you have a job but it all depends on how much you make and they may only pay a certain percentage
  • I'm pretty sure she would be able to keep it, at least for pregnancy related expenses.  Medicaid has a program for pregnant women specifically, and it covers ONLY the expenses related to the pregnancy/delivery.  For example, if you were covered under this and went to the ER for a sprained ankle, it would not be covered.

  • I had a graduate assistantship when I was pregnant with DD that paid about as much as your friend will be making and I still qualified for Medicaid.  I don't know about Medicaid, but I know with UE, you lose benefits if you get a job offer and don't take it.

My sister started a new job with really good benefits, before her 60 days were up she found out she was PG. Since she did not have insurance yet they gave her Medicaid for pregnant women. Even after she got her regular insurance they would not cover the pregnancy as it was pre existing. She kept her Medicaid for pregnancy only as her insurance would not cover it.

  • I'm pretty sure that even if she were to take the job she can still be covered under medicaid.  They have a medicaid program that is specifically for pregnant women and will cover them until their post partum check up.
  • Wow, thanks for all the info! So the general consensus is that she can keep her pregnancy benefits. That is sort of what my older sister was saying. Tricia you are right it would be awful to not take the job since they are so hard to come by. Hopefully she will get this straightened out. I complain how expensive my health insurance is, but I cannot imagine having to go without it!
  • When i was pg with DS I was working in the begining and making about that maybe a little more and was approved for benefits they will drop her only after the baby is born though because there is a difference in income requirements pg vs non pg
  • I have medicaid, now.  Pregnancy medicaid will take care of her for everything, not just OB-related stuff.  She will be able to keep it for 2 months after her baby is born.  Her child will also have 1 year of coverage following birth.
