For those who changed their passport...

I was wondering if anyone has legally changed their name on their passports.  If you did, how much did it cost and what do you have to do?

It depends on how old your passport is. If it was issued less than 1 year ago, it is free. If it has been more than a year, you have to pay all of the fees again and it is $140.

  • I already had one, but it was expiring in april so I basically just had to do a renewal + provide proof of name change (marriage certificate) + get new photos taken and mail them in. It cost $110 and I mailed it with tracking through usps which was an extra $4, the photos were maybe $7ish at Rite Aid. The website is surprisingly good and I didn't have any issues figuring out what I needed to send in. You fill out questions and it will fill out the form for you. If your passport isnt expiring for a while, I think it's a slightly different process.

It's only $110 if it's a renewal for the passport. The passport card is $140.

  • Mine was less than a year old, so all I had to do was submit new photos (used a free online program and my digital camera) and mail it with a flat rate envelope (USPS, 5 bucks).
  • Good catch, Becca! You're right. That $110 is still going to hurt, though!

My passport is only 2 years old so I'm just going to wait until I know I'm going to need it before I dish out the dough to renew it in my new name. I'm POOR! =P

Me too. Esp since DH doesn't have one. So there isn't a point to do it atm.

  • figures!  Mine doesn't expire until 2015.  Can I just leave it the way it is and book flights with my maiden name on the passport?  Someone said to do that but I wasn't sure if it would casue grief?

I don't know about legality, but I do know that if you travel internationally, hotels ask for your passport when checking in. So if your passport doesn't match your credit cards or reservations, it may be problematic.

  • Does anyone know -- will I loose my foriegn visa when I name change?  It's still valid until 2017.
