Help! WWYD?

So...I have been trying to sell some stuff from our wedding, like the 12 inch mirrors we used as centerpieces, I have no need for those. Or the vases, table cloths, etc.

So I put up some stuff on mybridalstuff.com and some girl bought my mirrors, she bought eight of them for $35 and I didn't charge her shipping, because I didn't think to include that in the price, etc., I know better next time....

Anyways I spent $10 in shipping. I sent them and one arrived broken.

So she wrote me this email:

Hello Kayla I received the package, one is broken how can I get it replaced?

So what do you think....is she asking where to get them to purchase more? Or is she asking if I can send her another? Or for money back?

What should me email say? Obviously I'll apologize it was broken, it wasn't broken when I put it in the box.

But my ad said to buy each mirror for $5 or buy all 8 for $35. So that mirror didn't technically cost her anything...and I didn't charger her shipping.

So I don't think I should give her any money back, but I'm  not even sure that's what she's asking...

So help! Please and TIA.

Re: Help! WWYD?

  • As much as you would not like to reimburse her something for the broken mirror, unless you stated on your listing that items damaged during shipping were not your responsibility, then you really should give her some money back. I did $35/8, which comes out to $4.375, so you could reimburse her about $4.40 and send it to her in an envelope. I'd also let her know where she might find a replacement elsewhere, since you don't have more and you really aren't responsible for finding another to replace it.

It does still suck that you're missing out on the extra money (due to a broken mirror and not charging for shipping). But you gotta do the right thing.

  • Ditto Kim. You should treat this like any other business transaction. If you ordered the mirrors from a company and one showed up broken, you'd be asking for either a replacement or a refund. Since you can't replace it for her, a refund is really your only option. Letting her know where she could find a replacement would also be really nice.

  • Ok cool.

Thanks guys, I'll email her right now and tell her I'm sorry it showed up broken, where I bought them, and that I'll send her $4.40 back.
