Schools in Toledo

My fiance and I and have been wanting to buy a house. I want to be able to know more about the schools around here since I'm originally from Cleveland area and I don't know much about them. I've tried looking them up online but I didn't get too much information. I want something with a great athletics program as well as academics. I'm not religious, so I'd prefer to not send my future children to a religious school but I'm also not entirely above it if it means doing what's best. Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on the schools in Toledo?

Re: Schools in Toledo

  • The local suburban districts tend to rate better than TPS, but there are definitely very good schools within TPS as well.  Just about every district around here has had some cuts recently due to budgetary issues / levies failing, etc., but I think that's just a fact of life.

Suburb-wise,  Maumee, Perrysburg, Sylvania, Anthony Wayne & Ottawa Hills all seem to be pretty good districts in general.

Within TPS, I would personally stick to the Bowsher High School area (South Toledo), and would prefer Crossgates, Beverly, Glendale-Fielbach or Harvard Elementary.   If you're not sure what specific schools an address is districted for, you can check it out here:  http://tps.org/street-directory.html

  • Oh, and I guess I should ask what area(s) you're looking at for homes.  Do you need/want to be in a certain part of town?  That also determines school recommendations. :)

  • The  highest rating, "excellent with distinction"

Springfield, Ottawa Hills, Lake Local (Yeah Lake!!!) & Wauseon Schools

     Ranked in the "excellent" category:

Anthony Wayne, Sylvania, Bowling Green, Perrysburg, Maumee, Rossford, and Washington Local.

Effective: Oregon, Findlay, Fremont, Genoa, Northwood, Swanton, and WoodmoreToledo Public Schools, is rated "continuous improvement" for the third year in a row.

http://www.toledoblade.com/article/20100828/NEWS04/8280303 ~ here is an article for the Toledo Blade that may explain better. I didn't read it, just kind of skimmed it. (Sorry I cant make a clicky w/ FireFox)

If it were me I'd look into the Anthony Wayne school district. (Monclova, Waterville & Monclova). AW is huge into sports and supporting their students. (My two oldest did attend AW until we bought our new home last year) My children now attend Lake but it is a way out.  Also I'm sure I won't make any friends here but I never in a million years would send my kids (and I have 4!) to a Toledo Public School. Catholic or private, yes.  Just my opinion though! (And I grew up in South Toledo & my parents still live there for the time being)

  • This is one of many things we've been thinking about lately...would like to move before Baby B starts school...but I really like the Old Orchard neighborhood...but do NOT want my kid going to TPS.  I have no faith in that school system right now.  DH is a product of Bowsher, and he wouldn't even entertain sending our kid there the way things are right now (granted...high school is many years away).  As it stands, even though we're not catholic, it will likely be catholic schools for us - Christ the King and Central Catholic.  If we stay in Toledo.  DH's cousins two girls go to Toledo School of the Arts (or whatever its called) and another of our friends daughter goes there.  Not a school for athletics, but the artistically gifted.

Besides the school reports that are public knowledge, it would probably help to speak with some actual parents to get their thoughts...example:  I went to Rossford all the way through...all fine and dandy in elementary school...but when we transitioned to junior high and high school was not a happy time for me...while I wasn't bullied, those of us who did not live in town were considered outcasts...and those who didn't come from families that went there for generations were also considered outcasts.

  • Hello Clevelander!!!!  My husband went to JCU.  We lived in Strongsville and I taught in Parma for a couple of years before we moved back here (home). Including myself, husband, and siblings, I have 4 suburban districts covered and I teach 4th grade in Bowling Green.

Here is my professional opinion:  Sylvania (Southview HS and Northview HS), Springfield, Maumee,  Anthony Wayne (Whitehouse, Waterville (where I live now), and Monclova), Perrysburg, and Ottawa Hills are good districts.

In Sylvania and Perrysburg you are going to have higher property taxes. Think along the lines of Strongsville but Perrysburg is a bit smaller. Ottawa Hills is pricey is like a Chagrin Falls or Orange.  Maumee is like a North Olmsted.  Anthony Wayne is like a West Geagua but not that far out. Springfield is like a Brush with a touch of "rural".  Keep in mind that Toledo is not spread out like Cleveland.  You can go around Toledo and hit all major suburbs in 20 minutes round trip.  **Disclaimer, my comparisons are as close as I could recall.  Things might have changed in the four years we have been back!!!  lol

Personally, I  and two brothers went to Southview, my husband to Northview and is a school counselor in Maumee,  two brothers to Perrysburg schools, and a brother and sister to AW schools.  All districts are good.  I would stay away as well to TPS.  I did my student teaching at Walbridge Elementary and subbed for 6 months.  Some schools are good so if you do go Toledo, go either Old Orchard area or South end and get out before junior high.

One more thing professionally, all districts right now are having funding issues.  Even Sylvania is cutting 100 positions.  Until they change school funding, it is still up the people who vote in levies so you are rolling the die no matter where you land.

     Good luck!!!!

  • In defense of TPS, I've been in the schools recently and a lot of the media coverage highlights only the bad never the good.  There are fantastic examples of awesome students in the TPS system.

I did a story about TECHS (toledo early college high school) and Start and both are in a program with schools from around our area that highlights science engagement and outside learning.

Because TPS is so huge and has to take anyone there are a lot of problems, but there are still gifted students within TPS and because TPS serves a large minority population students who attend/ed TPS are eligible for more perks in reguards to scholarships and the like.

I know of a grant that's still offered and it's ONLY offered to TPS kids and you basically get it if you apply.  It was half grant half loan.  So for instance I got $4000 over 4 years and had to pay back $2000.  Now granted that's not a lot of money but I also got a 4 years full tuition scholarship also because at the time the scholarship was only offered to TPS students. (Right place right time in the schoalrship office when the scholarship came through.  The 4 of us that applied all of us got it. It was crazy and freaky and I only got the chance to apply because I was at a TPS school.)

Right now where I live I would send my kids to elementary because the elementary is really good in our area...after that I'd have to see where the schools are.  Every parent style is different and like most major city schools TPS has a pretty bad rap.

  • Awesome! A lot of good information. Lol, and Cleveland rocks! I'm actually from around those cities, a little further west though. I miss Cleveland since we've moved here, but Toledo has been very cool. Everyone here is really friendly and awesome, so it's worth it since my fiance is going to BG and wants to join the Toledo police after he's finished so we plan on staying here. Wow. Run on sentence.

    Anyways, keep the information coming!

Also, we love the Old Orchard Neighborhood. We're in that currently, but one of the houses I love is near Ottawa Park off Kenwood BLVD. We're sort of looking all over the place, lol.
