Sunday Alcohol sale support gaining traction?

I can't believe we live in a state where you can't buy beer and wine on Sunday.

http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/sunday-alcohol-sales-legislation-814359.html

For the first time in several years, they think they have a good chance of succeeding.

The first step came Monday in the state Senate, where legislation was filed to allow local governments to ask voters if they want Sunday beer, wine and liquor sales at stores. A similar House bill is expected to follow later this week.

"Perhaps it has a greater chance of passing this year than ever before," said Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, R-Woodstock, a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 10.

However, if the legislation passes, a fight is likely on the local level. It would be up to counties and municipalities to decide if and when to hold the vote.

Jerry Luquire, president of the Georgia Christian Coalition, said with Perdue gone, "there is no question" that the Sunday sales bill will pass this year. He said the coalition is already preparing a grass-roots effort to lobby local governments if the measure gets through the General Assembly.

  • While I'm not a huge drinker, it would be nice to be able to buy a bottle of wine or some beer in case we wind up going to a friend's house for dinner and didn't have any at home.

  • I really hope it passes, even though many counties will still not allow it. It's so freaking stupid that it can't be sold. I don't see why it should stop at wine & beer - it should include all alcohol. Freaking Bible Belt BS! I don't even drink and I think it's stupid that we all have to bow to the "church."

especially when everything else doesn't "bow to the church." i.e. school systems...
  • Super happy to hear this. You have no idea how many times I have needed a bottle of wine on a Sunday!

  • I hope this passes. It would be nice to be able to grab some wine or beer on Sunday sometimes. Especially in the summer when it's BBQ time.

  • Yeah, I've needed sherry for cooking on a Sunday before and was up the creek without a paddle. So stupid.
  • A person can't go buy alchohol and drink at home... so instead they drive to a bar and drink. It makes no sense.

Hell, it even bit me in the butt one time! It was tailgate day at the Falcons game, and I couldn't go buy beer. So, I had to hit my liquor collection (okay, I am sure I didn't *have* to). Anyways, the 7&7 drinks went down like water. Needless to say, it snuck up on me! I feel asleep on Marta and woke up at the wrong station. Doraville instead of Peachtree-Dunwoody. That wouldn't have happened if I had been able to buy beer! Such a great argument to repeal the law, eh?  Hahahaha.

    best. reason. ever.

i just think it's dumb....even though i almost always have several bottles of wine in the house, DH can't even buy NON-alcoholic beer on sundays.

  • Yeah, it was a pretty big shocker for us when we moved here. At first we couldn't figure it out, but with a little research we figured it out.

  • I've always thought it was a dumb law.  I mean, in most restaurants you can get a drink on Sunday (except for my stupid town which is totally dry on Sunday), but you can't buy something to take home?  What sense does that make?
