RFOTD

Oklahoma's official state vegetable is the watermelon.

Is that where the watermelon crawl originated?

Re: RFOTD

  • Um, watermelon's not a vegetable, it's a fruit, it has seeds.  Wonder what they're teaching in their science classes in OK.
  • Their vegetable is a fruit? This scares me a little bit as we are going to OK this summer for our car club's annual meet.

  • According to the ever knowledgeable site Wiki Answers, it is both a fruit & a vegetable...

Fruit and a vegetable- There are seeds inside it. More specifically, a fruit is the mature ovary of a flowering plant. So, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, beans, etc are all fruits (the parts we eat). Examples of vegetables are: potatoes (stems); spinach, lettuce, cabbage (leaves); radishes, turnips, carrots (roots); asparagus, rhubarb (stems). An ear of corn is a fruit but we eat only the seeds.

Even though it has seeds, the watermelon is also a vegetable because it falls under the family of squash, cucumbers, and pumpkins which are in fact vegetables and are only botanically fruits.
