Last August DH applied for another FT firefighter position at a different dept. Bigger city, much better pay scale, better benefits, etc.
He made it thru all the phases of testing (written, physical, psychological, etc), and was interviewed. Got a call in... November? from one of the battalion chiefs saying that he had made their hiring list (fire depts often rank candidates and create a hiring list that is used for the next year, two years, etc) and although he wasn't high enough on the list to be in the January recruit class, he is high enough to be an alternate for the January class (in case someone fails out). Proceeded thru background check, drug screen, etc. Even got measured for uniforms in case he got called.
Then he hears they're doing another recruit class in March, and they would be using the same hiring list from the January class. Yay! I mean, he's high enough on the list to be an alternate for January, surely he'll be in the March class, right?
Nope.
He got a letter yesterday saying he
failed the testing and would not be considered for this class, but was welcome to re-apply in the future. WTHeck?!?
I told him he needs to call and follow up. Told him to very nicely ask for an explanation as to how he could be accepted onto the hiring list for the January class, be told he was high enough on the list to be an alternate, go as far as being measured for uniforms, then all of a sudden be told he failed the tests he took last fall.
I should note that we knew two other guys who applied back in August, actually did fail the testing, and got letters immediately following whichever test they failed, without proceeding thru the rest of the testing.
We're both just really ticked. We've basically been sitting here waiting for a phone call telling him when to show up for the job, discussing how his schedule will change while he's on probation, how we'll need to adjust, etc. And now they tell him they failed something...
four months ago?!? Yeah, I'm ticked.
Re: vent re: DH's potential new job (he didn't get it)
This is what I would do. That sounds really weird.

I would most def call and ask what exactly he failed since they failed to notify him in a timely manner what he didn't pass in the first place. It almost sounds like someone either forgot to send the obligatory you didn't make it letter or they decided to go a different route. In either case, it most certainly warrants some type of an explanation.
FWIW, I would be upset, too. That's a lot of time to pass and him getting very far in the process only to be told thanks but no thanks. I hope they are able to give you guys some better explanations. GL.
I wonder if there was a mix up somehow and he got a letter intended for someone else?? If he really had failed something last year and they missed it at the time, you think they would have explained that in the letter (and apologized profusely for all the additional time he's committed to the process when he shouldn't have been in the running)
Side note: I had no idea the process for being a firefighter was so tough & competitive!
