Poll for those TTC

Did you and your husband go to an OB/GYN to talk about the fact that you're TTC?  Or do you just go ahead and try, and only go to the doctor if you're having trouble?

I feel like on TV and in movies, couples are always having consultations with doctors when they're ready to start trying to have a baby,  but I wasn't sure if people do that IRL unless there are concerns about fertility.  I don't want to just go into it willy-nilly, but I also don't want to just waste everyone's time, and have us just sitting there looking silly because there isn't really anything to talk about.

Re: Poll for those TTC

  • We haven't been to a doc. We decided to just start trying. It's been 5 months with no luck though (!!!) so I think we may need to see someone eventually. I'm still waiting to be approved for insurance.
    Me: 26 DH: 32
    TTC since 08/2010
Anovulatory since at least 12/2010 (probably longer, unDx)
    Dx PCOS 3/2012
    SA 5/25/12--normal
    June 2012--50mg clomid+TI--BFN
    July 2012--50mg clomid+Ovidrel+TI--BFN, lining at 5mm
    August 2012--5mg femara+Ovidrel+TI
  • Personally before we start trying I plan to go to the doctor. I don't know when they do genetic testing to rule out life threatening diseases, but I want to get that done, because my dad never knew his father. So of course I worry about what I may potentially be a carrier for. However neither DH or I have insurance right now, and we frankly cannot afford any medical expenses (in this regard) until we get health benefits.

There are plenty of people that never do genetic testing, or see their OB/GYN until they believe they are pregnant though. Provided you get yearly exams, you may not have much to discuss.

  • I'm not TTC, but at my last annual, I told my GYN I wanted off BC and she told me if I'm going to start, I should start pre-natal vitamins.  They're most effective in the earliest stages (or something like that), so starting them while trying can only be good.  She also said, for now OTC pre-natals are fine, but if I get serious, we should talk so she can prescribe?  I wasn't paying super close attention because at the time, I really wasn't interested in TTC.  She didn't go into further details because we're not actively trying.

I will probably discuss more in-depth with her at my next annual this spring.

  • I didn't talk to my dr about it before I started trying. I have to see her every 6 months, but I never mentioned it. I saw her 5 weeks after I found out I was pregnant and she really didn't tell me much of anything. Just about genetic testing and prenatals. Everything else I learned on my own. I'm not sure if this is because she's a midwife and not an OB/GYN.

  • I have a super awesome GP who also does my annual exams, so I mentioned it to her at my last visit before the wedding, when I knew I'd be going off BC shortly thereafter.  She was like, relax and have sex a lot.  Come see me if you're not PG in 6 mo.  She said it really does help to just relax, and discouraged me from even charting.  I did chart for 1 month just to see if I am ovulating, and everything looked fine.

Ditto this.  DH and I are not actively trying - yet - but you should be taking pre-natal vitamins as soon as you're serious about TTC.  My next annual exam with my OB/GYN, I am going to bring it up and start the ball rolling.

  • Ok, so I'm already KU, but...

I mentioned it to my doc at my last annual - since we'd be married & ttc before my next appt.  He just said that when we were ready to ttc to call the office and they'd write a script for pre-natals.  Also, I asked a pharmacist about the OTC prenatals vs the prescriptions - he said they're basically all the same except the level of folic acid in the Rx ones is higher - that's why they can't be sold OTC.  Beware, though - the Rx prenatals are uber expensive - even with insurance and a discount, I still pay $25/month for mine.

  • Are you trying to tell us something Laura?  Have you graduated to TTC?

At my last gyn apt, my gyn went into full pre-natal consult mode as soon as she heard I was off BC.  Like everyone else she recommended the vitamins.

She also went through family histories with both of us.  Hubby just happened to tag along for the visit.   She told us we didn't need genetic screening cause our baby would be a "mutt" and that they were her favourite and the least likely of inheriting anything troublesome.   Go interracial marriages!  I'm the product of one too.

  • I actually had my yearly exam yesterday. My doc said to start taking pre-natals and she wouldn't see me until a year has passed of DH and I trying to get KU. She did recommend prenatals. I mentioned that I bought the book Taking Charge of your Fertility for charting and understanding the whole timing thing and she said that is a good start. DH on the other hand, doesn't think his swimmers can swim, so hopefully that's just in his head and not an actual fertility issue (although if it is an issue we'll figure out the next best option for us).

  • Thanks everyone :)

We're not moving into the TTC stage yet, but we have been talking about it very seriously and have plans to start TTC 5 months before Jeff is done at his current lab - right now we don't know if that will be this December, or next December, so we may be TTC as soon as this July.  I just scheduled my annual exam and I'm planning to talk to my doc about everything, but it occurred to me that maybe we should be talking to her together.

We're interested in genetic testing, and it's something I'll bring up at my annual, but I'm not sure how feasible it is for us financially.  It would be nice, because Jeff's mom is adopted and we have no family history on that side, plus he has a possibly genetic condition - the problem is that there's no testing for that one yet. Sad

For some reason in my potentially naive mind, I thought this could be covered under some insurances. I could have sworn my friend's was covered. Maybe I'm going bsc.

  • I don't think genetic testing is covered by all insurance, and we have crappy student insurance (which I am still very grateful for) so probably not.  Plus, even if it is something like 80% covered, I think it's pretty expensive, so the remaining 20% might be a hefty chunk of change.

Wow. Indifferent I just looked up the approximate cost of genetic testing and holy crap it's more expensive then I thought it was.
