Toothpaste......did you know....

That it can be harmful.....unless it says safe to swallow!! Well, I didn't! Joshua's toothpaste says safe for 2 years and up but if you read the warning on the back it says keep out of reach of children under the age of 6!  Because if they swallow too much over time it can cause different problems! And if Leah were to get a hold of it and ate a lot of it she could get really sick and worse case scenario she could die! Well that freaked me out so I wanted to pass along that bit of info for people that have older and younger kids like I do!!

FYI, it's the fluoride that can be lethal.  Too much of it is bad for you. And actually they tell you that if your drinking water has fluoride in it than you shouldn't use toothpaste at all.....you should just brush with water!

Re: Toothpaste......did you know....

  • The EPA is going to reduce the levels of fluoride in drinking water soon, because people are getting it is so many other places, so I wouldn't give up the paste just yet.

I did know about not giving kids fluoride toothpaste until they can reliably not swallow, and to supervise until you are really sure.

The recommendation when I started daycare was the 'pea sized drop' for children, but in the last 2 years I was there the recommendation changed to 'a smear' we put the toothpaste on a small square of parchment paper and had the kids wipe their toothbrush through it, so there was an even thin coating on the brush that was harder to swallow than a dot would be.

I am not sure what age we started using toothpaste, but it was like half way through the toddler room so somewhere from 18-36 mo ( so like 24mo ?)

  • yeah, I mostly freaked out because Joshua left the toothpaste in a place where Leah got a hold of it and she ate some of it! I didn't realize it could be so harmful and that's why I wanted to make sure people knew!
  • yikes!  I've got to start reading more kiddo literature.  I'm flying by the seat of my pants!  Thanks for posting.

  • Yes, this is why they make special toothpaste for kids under 36 months old.
