Leftovers....

Here is the million dollar question..... how long are leftovers good for?

I just ate my Olive Garden leftovers from Saturday today (Tuesday) and I swear they made me sick......

How long are leftovers good for?

Re: Leftovers....

  • I usually eat leftovers the very next day, but always by the second day. But then again, I have a very sensitive stomach, so leftovers make me weary anyway.
  • I say two days max. Then again I am a little weird about dates on things and stuff like that.

  • I usually try to eat leftovers within 2 days.  I think food is probably 'fine' for like 4 days, but its freshness is definitely fading fast.

I've not felt well after eating a-few-days-old leftovers before too... probably not food poisoning, but a lot of mental anxiety about it.

  • I also say 2 days max for leftovers.  I have eaten it up to 3 days later, but try not to make it a habit.  Just makes me nervous to eat it past 3 days.

  • I said two days but I think it depends on what type of left overs.  If it's like part of a burger, I think it'd be fine for more than 2 days, but if it's something creamy or saucy, I wouldn't eat it after day 2.

  • I agree w/PP.  It definitely depends on the food.  I usually won't touch restaurant leftovers after day 1, but things I have made myself at home may make it 3 days.  After that though they don't have a chance.  If I even question the date it was made, I won't touch it.  I am very finicky about leftovers.

  • It really depends on what kind of leftovers were talking...restaurant i'll give them a day or so in the refrigerate and then I wont eat them, but about 3 days in Hubby will still eat them... home made food, i'll give it about a week and a few days.....(i'm not a big left over eater but mike will take them for lunch so they really don't stand a chance of being in there for more then the time frame above.)

  • I agree on the food type/how it's prepared thing.

Homemade chicken/turkey I do-4 days, beef-3 days, restaurant items-2 or 3 depending what it is

  • I'm also not a huge leftovers fan; if I'm going to eat something that was brought home from a restaurant it'll be in under 3 days.  DH will eat anything without stuff growing in it, and makes fun of me for not liking leftovers.

I agree with PP that it's food dependent, and if I cook it at home it automatically gives it a few extra days of shelf life (not for any good reason other than it didn't have to wait for transportation home so was in the refrigerator sooner).
