any other teachers starting to get worried?

Re: any other teachers starting to get worried?

  • I wrote this on facebook, but I am posting it again here:

Our city is F'd. Thank goodness M is not in school here now. And why can't some of those people who make almost $300k a year take a salary cut until this gets worked out instead of closing schools and almost 500 people losing jobs? Ugh.

  • The meeting was brutal....went until midnight.  The district is trying really hard for staff to be the last resort cuts.  It's just really hard when 80% of the operating budget is people.  The cuts are going to hurt and be painful regardless of where or who loses their job.  I'm glad they are doing the budget processs now and notifying employees ASAP and not waiting until the summer.  Regardless, cutting 113 million is painful across the board.
  • That just makes me sick.  Even aside from my friends and family members who could lose their jobs (including my mom).  It affects not just the education field as well... with less money in education budgets, companies like my dad's architecture firm that does mostly school business and has to cut a significant amount of their staff... including cutting my dad down to 1/5th of the time/salary of what he used to work. It just really sucks that kids and educators have to suffer because politicians got tax-cut happy to appease their voters.  Really, everyone suffers.

  • I don't teach in Austin but nearby.  We just found out today that our deficit is going to be much, much larger than originally thought.  They are trying to figure out ways other than cutting teachers, but I'm pretty sure that's what it's going to come down to because payroll is almost 90% of the budget.  I guess I'm naive but I never thought I'd have to be worried about a situation like this.

I'm curious...are any of you (or teachers you know) considering or looking into other careers?  What would you do if not teach/work in the school?

  • I'm not a teacher, but I just cannot wrap my head around this. Education is probably one of the top areas that needs more money, not less. When your state ranks so poorly in education, you don't take money away!
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • I teach in another school district, but most of my students live in Austin.  Our district is switching the high schools from a 7 period day, to a 4 period block day.  Each teacher is basically teaching 6 classes a day instead of 5. So that's one way our districting is cutting back on teacher costs...less teachers needed.

I have been thinking about other careers.  Well, not so much career as just stop working.  I work to stay busy.  We're thinking of me not working next year and if I didn't then I'd volunteer with the Boys and Girls club or something like that.

  • I just started doing my student teaching this semester and I'm worried about being able to find any sort of job related to working with children.

  • Ugh, we're in DFW and my DH's district is cutting back too now.  And their district has ALWAYS been financially sound (unlike a nearby district that rhymes with Ballas ISD).  They might not renew 1st year teachers contracts.  Hopefully none of this will affect DH but these days you never know.
