Mouse related--what would you do?

DH set some mouse traps last night in our breezeway and garage because we have been having problems with mice building nests in our trucks.  This morning I went to let DoggieCrushing out, and sure enough there is a mouse stuck to the trap.  He is still alive.  I called DH to see if I can let him off the trap into the woods.  He told me that it is impossible for me to get the mouse off the trap.  He the told me that I should KILL the mouse so he won't suffer.  He said that the mouse will try to chew his own legs off.  WTF.  I don't want to kill that mouse.  I told him that I am upset because this seems like a cruel way to catch mice.  He says we can't use the other kinds of traps with poison because of the dog.  WWYD?  Do I kill the mouse?  That just sounds awful.

Re: Mouse related--what would you do?

  • I'm sorry, that sounds awful.  My sister's apartment in the city had a ton of mice, and she tried every trap on the market.  She said the best trap she found was the one that zaps the mouse and kills it instantly.  It keeps it in a box and a light flashes to let you know a mouse is in there, then you open the door on top and dump it out.  You attract the mouse into it with some peanut butter.  We had a mouse last year and bought one of these traps on her recommendation and it worked great.  I was super freaked out by the idea of looking at the mouse, dead or alive, so this was a great solution for me.  I still make my H dump out the dead guys, though.
  • That sounds like a MUCH better trap.  I will have to ask DH to get that.  These sticky traps are the worst.  They don't actually kill the mouse, and then they just suffer.  He just emailed me and told me to put it in a plastic bag, and hit it with a shovel.  He told me it is mean to let it suffer.  EHhh....I know it is, but I just don't want to be the one to hurt it.
  • We had the sticky mouse pads when we lived in the city and oh my god, it was torture. I sat outside my place and cried because I could hear the poor little thing screaming and dying. If you can kill it, put it out of its misery... Sad
  • Sticky traps suck because you can't get the mouse off without really hurting it (if you can pull it off at all). I don't think I could hit it with a shovel. I'd probably just leave it for DH to take care of.

  • The one I have is similar to this.  Good luck!  I would not be able to hit a mouse with a shovel either Sad
  • DH just sent me an email to tell me to at least put it in a plastic bag tight, and then he will suffocate.  Oh gosh.  This  is awful.  I am going to do it.

I also sent him a link to the trap Baker suggested.

  • Indifferent

Def get the black box traps that they crawl inside of and kill them instantly. Glue traps are inhumane. Bad Mr. Crushing!

I could not kill it. I don't know what I would do if I were in your shoes.

  • I have absolutely no advice, just sympathy.  Ugh, not what you want to deal with first thing in the morning.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I put him in multiple plastic bags, and put it outside.  He was trying to chew off his legs.  I gently tried to get him off the trap, but there was no way he was coming off intact.  I am so mad right now.  I understand we can't have poison traps, but those box traps are just fine.  DH is going to get an earful when he gets home.

I'm glad you at least tried. Putting him outside is a nice thing to do. Hopefully he will die quickly since it is so cold out there.

    Mine would too!

  • Oh, that is just sucky! When we moved into our house in September, we quickly realized we had critters in our walls. the previous owner had the genius idea to put out poison. I flipped out, having 2 dumb dogs, and fearing accidental/ secondary poisoning. but the worse part was when they started dying IN my walls!

And why do the Boston exterminators put out glue traps? I was always afraid the dumb dog would get stuck, and I'd always toss them in the trash as soon as I found it!

I hope you find luck with the products the pp's have suggested, I use the old school traps. and yes, I empty them and reset them!

  • We had an awful mouse problem in our attic... we got those igloo traps the ones that they go in, it closes and kills them literally instantly. So much better than the sticky ones or the spring loaded ones, because they dont suffer. I wont use the poison ones either because they will eat the poison, crawl off and die and then their bodies smell AWFUL! We finally stopped the problem, such a pain because you feel bad but they are so dirty and gross, you can have them coming into your home or anything. Good luck!
  • When we lived in our old apt. we had a mouse issue...

We used these humane mouse traps.

They worked just fine. Word of caution... use rubber gloves when moving them... the mice leave you little presents inside... Ick!

When we moved into our new condo, we had a mouse problem, then we got a cat! The mice got the memo that Celie is quite a good little mouser and they have moved on.
