is this too girly?

so we've been pretty lax about gearing up for baby2, but with a month to go, i finally started thinking about ordering him a crib and some sheets... granted, he'll hopefully be in the bassinet in our room for a good month or two, but it'd at least be nice to have his room looking a bit more welcoming than it does now :)

at any rate, i just found this set on the land of nod site but am wondering if it's too girly?  i'm really not into trucks and jungle animals, etc. so i thought this could be a good compromise:  http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=167&f=8020

not sure if we'd get the bumper, or just the sheets, blanket and bedskirt.  for reference, we painted his walls a warm, medium blue color, and i am trying to accent it with greens that are close to this color.  his rug is off-white and we have a rocking chair with off-white cushions and a green pillow on it now.  and his dresser and crib will be white.

i also really like this green dotted sheet & changing pad cover, but not the rest of the set, so i'm wondering if we should just go minimalist and get those two things, and not the rest of the pieces? http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=167&f=5092

and for reference on our (my) taste, this is my daughter's set, though we only used the bumper for decoration before she actually slept in the crib, and haven't used it since... http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=167&f=2254  we did use the blanket to put on the floor as a little mat for her when she was immobile, so having a mat wouldn't go to waste...

any thoughts?  mostly on the girly part of the first set, which was my original reason for posting.  sorry to ramble :)

Re: is this too girly?

  • I think that set is fine - not too girly.  He'd never notice anyway - so as long as you and DH like it, I say go for it.
  • I don't think it's too girly at all - nice color green and the pattern is very babyish.  I like it! :)
  • I'm of the other opinion, I think it's girly.  Personally, I wouldn't buy it for my son.  It's not screamingly girly, but my first thought was "that's a girl's set".

  • I like it, as I want it in purple if we have a girl.

So that said.. I think it's girly too.

I'll be honest; I agree with Pam.  I think it's girly too.

Why not just buy the sheets (which are not girly) and get one of the breathable bumpers in a green or neutral color?

  • I have to agree with Pam.. I think the bumper is girly. So cute, but girly.

That being said, DD has the same polka dot sheets on her bed (she has green ones and pink).  I bought them at Burlington Coat Factory.  I think they had a crib sheet in the same pattern too.

  • I like both sheet sets, but think the floral pattern on the bumper is too girly. If you're not going to use the bumper, just get some fitted sheets that you love. Love the polka dots, and mixing blues, greens and white/cream, though!

  • I think it's a little girly.

For baby #2, after spending $200 on a bedding set of which we only ever used the sheet and crib skirt, we went with separates. Just picked up sheets I liked and a plain white crib skirt with breathable bumper (white).

Easy, simple, cheaper. And since you're not supposed to use the big bumper or quilt what's the point of the set????? ;-)

  • I agree, it's girly.  If you like plaid and patchwork like Aliza's, how about these?

I feel like I have a lot more luck NOT basing my designs on bedding but on rugs and wall color.  We never used a bumper and just bought a solid bed skirt to match whatever fitted sheets we bought.

You may even want to check etsy and have something custom made, they're usually pretty reasonable and you can pick all your fabrics.

  • by the way, if we have a boy...  we're totally doing a robot theme and using this rockin' rug from land of nod:  http://www.landofnod.com/family.aspx?c=9761&f=835  not that you asked...
  • thanks everyone.  in case you're interested, i just ended up ordering the green sheet with green polka dots, and green polka-dot changing pad cover, and a few blue and green baskets in the same colors...will probably get an off-white bedskirt somewhere and let that be that.  i should have also mentioned i'm not into typical baby pastel-y colors, i like them more bold, so it's been a long search for sheets that i like.

BTW, i do like the look of the bumper on the crib for when people come over to visit those first few months and the baby's not sleeping there anyway (i'll admit it, i'm vain when it comes to home decorating :), and we did use the quilt last time as a play mat on the floor... but this poor little guy will just have to make due without :)  the first of many times where he gets the short end of the stick, i'm sure :)

thanks again for the input and for saving my soon-to-be little guy from his mama's misguided tastes!

  • i don't think it is too girly at all! maybe if the walls were pink :)

    i love the first one!

    assuming no bumper.

sorry, i was a little late!
